    Default Herbert Holmes

Trying to find the family of Herbert Holmes. He was born around 1870 in Stoke.
He was a coal miner. He had a son called John who was born around 1884.He married a Leah Latham in about 1913.May well be in the 1891 or 1901 census......

I assume that your estimated year of birth for Herbert is a wild guess – if his son John was born around 1884, then he made an early start! So ignoring that, and concentrating on the other information, the following appear. However you will need to provide more detail if the correct one is to be identified.

There are two Johns in 1891 with a father called Herbert

    Either:

    1891 census RG12; Piece: 2749; Folio 34; Page 23
Father Herbert Holmes, collier, born 1844, Stanton, Staffs
Mother Selina, born 1846, Ashbourne, Derbyshire
John Holmes, scholar, born 1885, Ashbourne, Derbyshire
Other siblings Frederick, 20, Elizabeth, 13, William, 15, Nancy, 10, Florence A, 6, Samuel, 4, Charles, 1, all born Ashbourne, Derbyshire
    Living Orchard Road, Alfreton, Derbyshire

    Or:

    1891 census RG12; Piece: 2180; Folio 71; Page 42
Father Herbert Holmes, Coalminer b 1845, Longton, Stoke on Trent, Stafford
Mother Fanny, born 1849, Longton, Stoke on Trent, Stafford
John, scholar, born 1882, Longton, Stoke on Trent, Stafford
Other siblings: William, 10, Fanny, 7, Herbert, 6, Lewis, 4, all born Longton, Stoke on Trent, Stafford

Living at 1 Middle Cross Street, Longton, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire

Assuming that the second family in 1891 is the correct one, this is the same family in 1901

    1901 census RG13; Piece: 2614; Folio: 80

    Middle Cross Street, Longton, Staffs
Herbert Holmes, head, married, age 57, coal miner / hewer / underground, b Longton, Staffs
Fanny, wife, age 53, b Longton, Staffs
William, son, age 21, coal miner / hewer / underground, b Longton, Staffs
John, son, age 19, coal miner / hewer / underground, b Longton, Staffs
Fanny, daur, age 18, Potter’s turner, Lathe Treader, b Longton, Staffs
Herbert, son, age 16, Potter’s saucer maker apprentice, b Longton, Staffs
Lewis, son, age 15, Potter’s jigger turner, b Longton, Staffs
