Many thanks for the look up. If it is the same person it will be a first time policeman has been an occupation in this family, looks like I will have to dig further. i don't suppose i could ask you to look him up for 1871, could I?
If i can find him with a wife and family, i might beable to find a marriage and then get the cert to prove either way.

    Many thanks

    Hi Kay1,

I've just checked Ancestry for him for 1881 and 1891 and can not pick him up. Tried under Simmons and Simons searching age and place of birth.

Looks as though he has done a runner.

    Hiya Kay1,

"Looks as though he has done a runner."

Would that be a Bow Street Runner?

Many thanks for the effort in looking for John Simmons, I expect he will turn up one day - perhaps the other side of the law!

    Default John Simmons

    Hi there Kay1

Looking at the 1851 Census for Newhaven we have the following entry:-

    HO107/ 1643/ Folio 755/ Page 291 - Railway Cottages, Newhaven

SIMMONS John, Head, Marr, 23, Rail Plate Layer, born Iford
............ Fanny, Wife, Marr, 21, born Lewes
............ John, Son, Unm, 1, born Newhaven.

Does any of the other information that you have tie up with the above.
