Default Help with occupation abbrev. on 1861 uk census

    Hi there
I have a gentleman who is shown on the 1851 census as "Colonial Service". (age 62)
On 1861 census it looks as if what is in the occupation column is: N.S. (age 70)
    Does anyone have any ideas....?
    Thanks in advance

N.S. for Not Stated? just a guess.
Is it written in the same hand as the rest of the entry, or does it appear to have been added by the bloke who collected the data?

If you provide the census reference, I'm sure someone will look at it for you.

Default 1861 census re abbreviation of occupation.

    Hi again
As suggested posting details of census page for scrutiny.
I have a feeling the suggestion of "Not Stated" could be right...

    1861 census
NAME: HUNTER, James b. 1791 Middlesex, Residence, Middlesex
    Class: RG9; Piece: 15; Folio: 11; Page: 25;

    Look forward to ideas.

I see that the word "Retired" has been crossed out and the letters NS put in its place. NS is written in very different handwriting presumably by the person checking the entries, so I'll go along with the "Not Stated" suggestion.

I had a look too, so that is certainly what has happened, James has put 'retired' on his household schedule, which the enumerator has copied to the enumeration schedule, and then the census data collector or some cross-checker has crossed it out and put 'n.s' so it will fit in his census classifications.

Thanks everyone - I'll go with Not Shown or Not Stated.

As stated in other messages, "Retired" was clearly what James Hunter had stated on his household schedule.
