1891-1904 missing yrs ( help )

Hi i'm a new member.
I've been researching my family tree, for a few months now,
but keep coming up against a brick wall linking my Grandad, to a 1891 family.

Grandad, James Harrison Smith.married Ellen Jane Hunt in Liverpool 1904.
He was aged 20 yrs.Address on cert given as Skirving St. Everton.
(Skirving St.not on 1901 Census).
Fathers name Alfred Smith .
A fellow researcher recently located a Alfred & James,H,Smith, living at
4 Delta ST. Litherland Parish Ormskirk. (Widower)?.

Are they the same family of Smith's Living at Torr St, Everton.1891 census
consists of- Alfred Smith.wife Alice. Daughter Sarah age 7. James.H.Smith age 5 yrs. (Ages seem about right).

I also have individual records for 1881 census. for Alfred Smith Snr age 61 &
Alfred Smith Jnr.Age 15 yrs. living at 10 Hodder St, Everton. I have not got the 1881 census return. can anyone oblige.

Also have Alfred Smith & family Living at Devonshire Place.3 Sefton Terrace.Everton. 1871 Census.

If I could fill in those missing yrs 1891-1904. the rest would fall into place.

Hope someone can help, be much appreciated.

Hi Scouse
The birth cert. of your grandfather will give you the name of his mother, if it is Alice then you are one step closer to the 1891 family. The next step would be to find the marriage of his parents and hope Alice has a more unusual name than Smith to make your job easier. This would in turn give you their father's name which would help link to the 1881 family you found. I've checked the 1891 entry you found and noticed the family above "your" Smith is that of Joseph Smith and his widowed mother Elizabeth which is another link to the 1881 family. I'm afraid its chasing those cert. to confirm this.
I have found 2 entries on the death index for Alice Smith in Ormskirk:
Alice Smith age 38 March quarter 1894 8b 582
Alice Jane Smith age 33 June Quarter 1891 8b 739

Again Alice's marriage cert will give you more of an idea of age to help you decide which if any of these are likely to be her

If age is 32 on 1891 census then the death you found is a possibility and I suggest that the one for Alice Smith age 33 in Ormskirk may be a 2nd choice bearing in mind that in 1901 census you think the family were in Ormskirk. I believe the 1891 census was taken in early April so a move to Ormskirk before end of June is unlikely but not impossible.
