Default Charles Douglas, RN, of Wexford

In a will of 1851 I discovered that a member of a family I am researching married Charles Douglas of Wexford, serving in the Royal Navy. He married Elizabeth Page, of London (b. 1817). The couple are not found in the 1851 census of England, and the fact that the will refers to Charles Douglas 'of Wexford' suggests that the couple were residing in Ireland in 1851 - either that or Charles Douglas was at sea, and his wife was in Ireland (?). Elizabeth is found in the 1861 census, living in London, the 'widow of a RN captain'.
If anyone knows about Charles Douglas, or can suggest any avenues of enquiry, I would be very grateful.
    Best wishes from Cornwall

You might as a first step try The Navy List, copies of which can be found in many larger reference libraries and also can be purchased on CD via The Parish Chest.

Is this chap related to Rear Admiral Sir Charles DOUGLAS?

When your chap died, did he leave a will?

Parts of your chap's career may be recorded in the London Gazette

If you search for the name Douglas in the Griffiths Valuation for Wexford at http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie
there is only one result for a William Douglas based in the New Ross area. On the following site there is one person already researching the Douglas name in Wexford.

    Happy hunting.

Many thanks for your time and interest - I tried the second link you mentioned, but I'm afraid I couldn't seem to gain access. IAN

    Yes Yelcub,
I tried that too but my security said was a suspect phishing site. I could have got it but it required me to lower the phishing security. I was looking forward to tracing my Grandads relatives in Wexford. William Ross.

I did a little more googling and think I may have found the person I'm looking for - not the famous Rear Admiral. The likely candidate is Charles Henry Douglas, who was promoted to Lieutenant in 1839 and to Commander in 1844. If this is the right person, he was appointed Inspecting Commander, the Coast Guard, in 1847. I have a collaborator who lives quite close to a library in which, I'm hoping, there is a copy of the Navy List for the relevant period.
Many thanks for your input IAN

Sorry the address got changed in transit. Try this
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/wexford.html and then select Search the Database and then on the next page fill in the name Douglas in the search box. This should get you the other person researching the Douglas family.

Many thanks for that. I am collaborating on this with a recently discovered relative who will take over this line of enquiry and acquire the records you mention. My interest in Charles Douglas is basically an attempt to discover more about his father-in-law, Henry Page,in whose will CD is mentioned
    With best wishes
