    Default Workhouse Births

    Hi

I found your post on this site when I was looking for information about my family. I was excited to know your ancestors lived at 69 Leather Lane as mine did in 1885. They were married at St Alban church which I went to see last Sunday afternoon. I was suprised it was closed to visitors. I have been trying to find the workhouse my great grandmother was in to give birth to my great uncle. My grandfather was born on College St. My family seem to have moved around the area frequently which I am curious about.

My great grandfather was Henry Hambley and he was a labourer. My grandfather Charles and his brother Henry eventually ended up in a Barnardos home and were sent to Canada. They were separated and never saw each other again but subsequently all their children have made contact and we are enjoying finding out about our past.

Could you help me do a bit more detective work to discover which workhouse Henry was born in and where you acquired the maps of the area? Henry's granddaughter is most interested in discovering more about him. Henry has one surviving daughter and Charles has one surviving daughter but they have many many grand and great grand +++ children.

    1. The birth certificate will tell you where he was born. Can you not find one?

    2. The London Metropolitan Archives has a good collection of maps.

Re workhouse on birth certificate. I have Henry's birthcertificate but all is says is workhouse. The family lived in the Clerkenwell area so I wondered how to discover if possible which workhouse he was born in.

    Thanks

The birth certificate states the registration district. If that says Clerkenwell, then he was born in Clerkenwell workhouse.
