    Default Gubtail roots in Wales?

    Hi everyone -

I am trying to trace a family member who settled and died in Porstmouth, New Hampshire USA in 1695. We believe he was born in 1650 and verbal records indicate he was Welsh, or at least crossed from Wales; however the name does not fit with names of that period. He married a MARY ABBOTT, daughter of WALTER ABBOTT and SARAH STEWARD, but we don't know whether than was before or after he left Wales.

Does anyone know whether this name - Gubtail - is Welsh? Or in what part of Wales he might have been located if he lived there?

    Thank you so much -

    Christine Guptill.

    Hi Christine,

This site is called Cuptill Genealogy with the heading Gubtail to Guptil. Its only a small site but has links to other people researching that name.

Thanks for this - actually there are much better sites, and I've contacted everyone I could find (including this person) but no one has info from before Porstmouth. Can anyone else offer assistance? Has anyone heard of a name remotely like this in Great Britain?
