    Default My Hutchins dead end.

My gt grandmother Annie Rosa Elizabeth Hutchins was born c. 1852 in Islington. Problem is I can't find a birth record.

1861 census - Is she the 9 year old neice of Charles Hutchins, Head at West St Overton, Hants RG9 712 151 25??? Assuming that this is my Annie, she (and what looks like a twin John) must be the children of a brother who is not at home for the census. They can't be the children of a sister otherwise their surname would be different.
Alternatively, could they be step children as I think niece/nephew were sometimes used instead of of step son etc.

In an effort to prove or disprove the above, I found Charles and his brothers in Hants on the 1851 census with their parents Thomas and Elizabeth and again on the1841 census. Two further brothers James and Frances came up and I tried to trace them forward with not a lot of luck.
I also checked the 1851 census for London assuming that Annie's age was slightly out and found a possible - Rosa Hutchins Daughter of John and Elizabeth in Islington.
I have looked for Annie's twin? John on later census but been unable to identify him.
I have found a number of births between 1850 and 1860 but there are so many variants of christian and surname it would cost a fortune.

1871 census - I have been unable to identify her positively.
03/07/1880 she married Lloyd Lewis at Overton, Hants - father's name on the certificate is blank.

1881 to 1891 they lived in Whitchurch, Wootton St Lawrence, Ewhurst, Monk Sherborne and Kingsclere.
1891 census they were in Wolverton, Kingsclere
1901 census they were at Manor Farm, Whitchurch.
Annie died in 1918 in Thatcham Berkshire.

I am at a total loss as to where to go next, short of buying every cert I can find. Any suggestions welcome and as always please feel free to point out that I may have missed the obvious!

My first thought is that, if she is the Annie on the 1861 census, with no father named on the marriage certificate she is more likely be the illegitimate child of a sister, hence the name would still be Hutchins.

I had a search on FreeBMD looking for two Hutchin childrens with the same registration who might be twins but could not find anything. Of course because they were nephew and neice, they might not be brother and sister as they could be cousins.

Any clues in the marriage witnesses or the address on the marriage certificate?

Hi Bumblebee and thank you for your observations. I have been looking at this for so long, I had convinced myself that Annie had to be the child of a brother but as you say the most obvious would be an unmarried sister. I had tried to follow the brothers and hadn't given any thought to any sisters. And again I think I locked onto the fact that as neice and nephew, Annie and John were going to be brother and sister.

As far as the marriage cert is concerned, the residence for each is shown as Overton - not a lot of help. The witnesses were Thomas Hutchins and Jane Lee. I had no luck with tracing Jane and as Thomas Hutchins is a very common name in Hampshire I am stuck on him too.

Anyway, I am going back to the drawing board or in this case the census and try for an unmarried sister. Hopefully I may get lucky and thank you again.
