    Hello Ray,

    Welcome to Brit-Gen.

I am unable to help with advice for obtaining service numbers, however have you looked for your grandad on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website? It is fuly searchable.

There are 312 G Williams listed on the CWGC site - which may be a lot to work through!

Do you have any medals which belonged to your grandfather? If you do, his service number should be on the edge of those..

    Hi Ray,

Do you have a date and place of birth for your Grandad? Do you know the name of the regiment he was in?

I have looked on Ancestry and there are a few George Williams who were serving or joined in 1902. There is alot of information in the records if you can just pinpoint which George is yours.

Also if you Google RAF records there are quite a few lines of enquiy you could follow.

    Good luck.

    Hi Ray,

There is a resource called 'Soldiers Died Great War'. It often records the place of birth, place of enlistment and (less often) the place of residence.

As June suggested, if you can provide the place of birth, year of birth etc we may be able to locate him or at least narrow the field down - if he did die in WWI.

    Smile ASplin Military

The Asplin Military History Resources site is a brilliant site and worth a look. There are some George Williams on there so may be helpful

    Hi Ray,

If you can find the marriage order the certificate. This will give his age. It may be possible to find them in the census then which will give the place of birth.

First stop I would suggest Free BMD, second stop GRO.
