I have a number of photos of ancesters in uniform. They also use common names ie 9 William Norgroves! It would help if we could identify the uniforms, as I haven't put photos up before will start with this one who might be my Great grand dad. Any ideas?

Hi Margaret,
That link actually allows you to scroll through 7 photos. I take it you're interested in all of them?
#1 Royal Artillery or Engineers would be my first thought.
#2 Regiment unknown, but he's a musician (perhaps a drummer)
#3 A drummer, regiment not obvious
#4 A Hussar or Yeomanry cavalry regiment I suspect, based on the uniform style.
#5 Not a lot to go on at first glance
#6 shame it's out of focus, but the middle one appears to be a musician/drummer again
#7 fascinating, but a mystery to me.
You need some real uniform experts for more insights.
I know a few to ask if you're happy to let me.

Yes please, although some have names, they are guesses. 4357 & three men are the same person (man in the middle) I would love 4371 to be GGD Blumfield Bombardier in Royal Artillery d 1879 ditto no 2.

My Two-Penneth... I'm certainly NO expert, but here goes.
1 of 7 (Alfred Ganley) Royal Engineers, going by Grenade on collar and Colour of banding on Pillbox hat.
2 of 7 The picture is named as Alfred Norgrove, Looks to be a Grenadier Guards uniform, as the Buttons are arranged "Singularly" and evenly spaced.
Coldstream Guards buttons are arranged in pairs, Scots Guards in threes, Irish Guards in Fours, Welsh Guards in Fives.
3 of 7 (4357) Drummer, looks to be Grenadier Guards again (buttons).
4 of 7 (4371) I would say Royal Artillery, again, going by the colour of the banding on his Pillbox hat. Unsure of rank, could well be your Bombardier.
5 of 7 (Ted Norgrove) Looks to be Royal Artillery.
6 of 7 (3 Men) The chap in the middle looks to be a Grenadier Guard, again the buttons are aranged singularly.
7 of 7 Bombardier in the Royal Artillery. I think the "S" above his chevrons denotes he's an artillery "Spotter".
Like I said, I'm not an expert, but I think this is somewhere close.

Just wanted to say, Margaret, what beautiful photos (1860s and 70s? I know nothing about military uniforms!), and looking like they are in the original album. It's wonderful that you have hung on to them, and know who they are. I've collected old photos for years, and it's so sad that most of them have no identification noted on the back. This forum is a great way for you to discover their past. Thanks for sharing them.

What Grenade on his collar, i just looks like a white smudge.
Several Regiments had a grenade as part of their badge.
But not the Royal Engineers.
If I could post pics direct to the site, I could show all the badges with a grenade in them.
Don't quote photobucket, had a look, its not worth the trouble.
Retlaw.
