    Default FLEXMAN/

I am trying to find information about a Joseph Flexman who married Lydia Ware in June 1820 in Chesham Bois. I have no info about where he is from, any siblings or parents. He is my ggg grandfather.

    Hello Rachel,

I don't know if this is the same man, but found these on the 1851 Census in Bucks.

    BKM 1851 Census
    Amersham Pt.9
    Piece:1717, Folio:455, Schedule:0002

    This looks like the Workhouse.

FLEXMAN, Joseph, Un, 60, Pauper, Labourer in Brickyard, b. Coleshill, HRT

Strangely, underneath there is a Lydia COX, aged 45, Marr. Domestic Serv. born Chalfont St. Giles, BKM.

As you can see this Joseph is shown as being unmarried, but it could be a mistake, as this is a transcription and taken from a long list of inmates. It was only the name of Lydia underneath, that urged me to make a note of it, just in case it related in some way.

This was the only Joseph Flaxman on the 1851 in Bucks.

    Default Joseph FLEXMAN

    Rachel,

This looks as if it could well be your Joseph & Lydia in the 1841 census of Chesham (mistranscribed as FLENMAN by Ancestry) - note the name of the next person down, shown as a separate household but living in the same house:

    HO107/47/2, folio 5, page 3
    Germaine St

Jos. FLEXMAN 49 Farmer Born in county yes
    Lydia do 50 yes
    Sophia WARE 53 Dressmaker yes
Martha BATCHELOR 15 Female Servant yes

It looks from the 1851 census of Chesham (HO107/1717, folio 139, page 13) as if Sophia WARE could be Lydia's sister in law as she is described as the married sister of a John WHITMELL, aged 65, an unmarried Tin Plate Worker living at High Street with another widowed sister Sarah JORDAN.

In the 1861 census Sophia is living in Little Missenden, Bucks (RG9/859, folio 69, page 6) with husband Nathaniel WARE, aged 72, a Turner of Bowls, born Chesham.

There is an extracted baptismal record on Hugh Wallis's IGI site of a Lydia WARE on 11 November 1785 at The Old Meeting House - Baptist, Chesham, father Nathaniel mother Elisabeth and a baptism there on 6 February 1789 of a Nathaniel WARE with the same parents. There are also baptisms for siblings of Lydia and Nathaniel too.

There are also the baptisms of a Wm FLAXMAN on 26 February 1821, Henry FLEXMAN on 3 April 1827, Charles FLEXMAN on 22 January 1823 and Robert FLEXMAN on 23 September 1825 all sons of Joseph & Lydia.

There is a member submitted baptism on the IGI (so should be treated with caution) of a Joseph FLEXMAN on 11 September 1791 at Buckland, Bucks, father Daniel mother Hannah WRIGHT.

Thank you so much. That is a help as it is definitely them. Lydia has a sister sophia and brother nathaniel. her parents were nathaniel and elizabeth. I do know of her other siblings, but i don't know any information about her parents except for that her fathers parents were john and ann/e. That helps to know Joseph was born in the county. That i did not know before. It also gives a timeline of his birth, so that helps a lot too. Thank you. If you happen across any more info, that would be fantastic.

I am also a decendant of Charles Ware Flexman (gg)- James Ware Flexman(g grandfather) - Ernest Wilfred Flexman(grandfather) I ordered the BMD for all variants of FLEXMAN from 1630-1830 and have found Joseph Flexman born to Jonathan and Margaret Flexman/Flaxman in Amersham. His baptism was 27 Mar 1791. Siblings: Hannah 6 May 1787, William 5 Jul 1789, Mary Ann 17 Feb 1793, Rebecca 1 Apr 1795. I have a date of death for Jonathan as 28 Jun 1828 in Chesham. The record states he was aged 76 and was from Chartridge at time of death. I have a few possibilites for Jonathan's birth around 1752 in the county, but nothing concrete. I cannot find the marriage between a Jonathan Flexman and Margaret, so now I am stuck again. Any information would be helpful. Thanks
