Default St. Olave Southwark church query

I have a marriage for George Palmer Wise x Caroline Archer in 1878 with a GRO reference of St. Olave Southwark volume 1d, page 364. I assumed that St. Olave was the church and ordered LDS film no. 375316 which covers the required period - but no marriage!
Can someone offer me some advice regarding the registration district, and to which church record I should possibly be looking at.
    Many thanks,
    Barrie.

St Olave Southwark was the name of the registration district - the marriage could have been in any number of churches - or in a chapel or synagogue or could have been a civil marriage only.

You need to get the marriage certificate.

By the way you may find it useful to read through this page and the other documents linked to that page -

You may find that your local library has some books which will help. "Ancestral Trails" is well spoken of.

Thanks Peter for the reply, but it's a bit hard from the antipodes to get to a relevant UK library, but I will have a look at the site you mentioned. Without local knowledge it's sometimes a bit difficult to fathom districts and churches. But many thanks,
    Barrie.

Default St. Olave Southwark church query

Hello Barrie Wise, I've just been going through the Forums and found your query about St. Olave. My g. grandparents were (I believed) married at St. Olve, Hart St. London in 1809 but wonder now on reading the replies you received to your query, if this is the case. I don't have any ref. Nos. etc. My g.grandparents lived at Isleworth. I live in Australia so, as you mentioned, it is difficult to know exactly which films to order from the LDS Family Research Centre near where I live. Maybe, I have been ordering the wrong films too, as I have had a lot of failures in finding the marriages, births etc. by ordering the films which hold the records of a certain church, St. Mary Magdalen at Richmond for example. Did you find what you were looking for eventually? from Betty Willson

    Betty

There was more than on St Olave in London.

St Olave, Hart Street is in the City and shouldn't be confused with St Olave Southwark which is in Tooley Street.

in the Mormon catalogue, the films you need to look for are under "Parish registers, 1563-1899 Church of England. St. Olave Hart Street Church (London)."

    Hope this helps.

Thank you Peter Goody for your reply. I want to ask another question but as it is not about St. Olave, I guess I had better start another thread, Betty Willson
