    Default William Ireton 1853

    Hi

Searching for the parents of William Ireton born 1853, we think in Islington.

I have his death certificate 1888 and also he married Eliza Govey.

Cannot find him on the 1861 census.

    Can anyone help please?

Yes I think so. His father's name will be fairly useful

Did you notice the oddity in the FreeBMD listing for the page that includes the marriage?

    Marriages Mar 1872

Govey Eliza Bethnal Green 1c 380
Ireton William Bethnal Green 1c 380
Tewkesbury William Bethnal Green 1c 380
Treton William Bethnal Green 1c 380
Ward Mary Ann Bethnal Green 1c 380

All 5 names are displayed by FreeBMD in bold meaning that they have been double keyed so there's less chance of it being a transcription error.

There should of course just be two marriages involving four people on a page in 1872. One possible interpretation is that one of the men had an alias recorded on the marriage certificate (as in "Smith otherwise Brown").

We don't know which man it was but if it's your man you will certainly wish to know about it. Of course, there could be a completely different explanation.

    Hi Peter

I didn't notice that but I think you could be right about an alias name. I have ordered the certificate. I will let you know if its is my relative.

The odd man out seems to be William Treton as I have found a census for William Tewkesbury with Mary Ann as his wife.

When I receive the cert it should answer the question.

It could be that the William was adopted and took his adopted parents name?

    Default William Ireton

    Hi All

I have now received William's and Eliza's marriage cert. The problem we have is that William's surname is shown on the cert as Treton, I think it is a fancy I.

Both have put their mark on the certificate so obviously couldn't read.

The father is down as Timothy but not sure if this is Ireton or Treton.

    Still puzzled

    Spinner,

Is there any way that you could scan that part in and let us have a look?

You could use Photobucket - see Mary's instructions.

I had a similar problem in that somebody's middle name was written down appearing to be Trewood. However, on his gravestone (which I hope is correct !) it is Irewood.
