Thank you Theresa.. If I wanted to go back further do I use the patronymic? Why does the groom's father have a different surname from the groom?

Sorry Stephanie, I'm actually not too up on Jewish ancestry research - I've just got the books. Kerrywood looks to be something of an expert (last post on page 12 of this thread) and can probably help a lot more than I can.

I think this entry here on SynagogueScribes is another family member:
    http://
synagoguescribes.com/blog/person-details/?value=1809"]http marriage of Abraham MOSES son of Bezaliel Joel.
And this would be the burial of one of Abraham MOSES' children http://
    synagoguescribes.com/blog/person-details/?value=24323
    Another sibling of Lazarus http://
    synagoguescribes.com/blog/person-details/?value=969 Moses MOSES' marriage
    and another http://
    synagoguescribes.com/blog/person-details/?value=3193 Samuel MOSES.

Try keyword search for Bezaliel to see if there are more.

You could also try the will abstracts under Secular records on the same site, whole load of results for family name MOSES.

    Dear Debbie

I wonder if you would be able to help me with a difficult death I am trying to find, and sadly cannot do so at the moment. It is my great great great grandfather, Marcus Cohen, born about 1830 ish prueben/germany.... of jewish origin. He came over to us as a young man where he met his wife Emma Marx, they finally settled in Greenwich, London in 1861 and indeed I can find them both on the 1861 census and 1871 census. However by 1881 Emma was a widow, so Marcus died sometime between 1871 and 1881. This is where the trail runs cold, for there is no record of a death in that area or nearby, and Emma continued to live in this area for most of her, rather long life. I wondered if perhaps he had a jewish burial would that still have to be registered normally? i am not really sure, there is a record of a Marks Cohen buried at the Lauriston Road Jewish cemetery, how do you research those records, or indeed, can you??? Any help you can give me will be greatly appreicated

    Many thanks

    Kim

    Default Morris Levi/Levy

    Hi,

My Gt Gt Grandfather, Morris Levi/Levy is believed to have been born around 1802 in Spitalfields although I can find no record of this. On his marriage record hi father is named as Henry Levi. He also had a brother Philip born circa 1814.

It has been suggested by a couple of my contacts that the family may have originated from a Russian Jewish background.

I am intrigued by this, but don't really know where to start researching.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Default MARCUS COHEN- EMMA MARX

    Kim
I have had a brief look on Ancestry Com and note a family tree which contains data on a Marcus Cohen and Emma Marx. This data includes: Emma Marx 1830-1914 and Marcus Cohen 1831-1886 with his death in Dec 1886 London. Their children are: Esther;Abraham; Julius; Harris;Jacob; Newman; Philip
There is a Passport record of a Marcus Cahn Merchant's Clerk Native of Prussia arriving in UK 15 April 1850. If these are your line post confirmation and I will try and supply more data.

Ps You asked about burial records and there is the JewishGen data base containing Worldwide records of individuals and the Cemetery Scribes data base which includes photographs of tombstones; transcriptions of memorials and importantly data on families

Free BMD have a Death Index record for MARKS COHEN Dec Qtr 1886 London City 1c 4 age 55. You might want to get a copy of this certificate to confirm whether or not Marcus/Mark/Marks are one in the same. The approx birth date would match Marcus.

Several of the family trees on Ancestry have the death of Marcus/Marks as 1886 however, as you rightly point out the 1881 Census RG 11 724 71 20 ( Crown Copyright, TNA) 5 Caradock St Greenwich shows - Emma Cohen H widow 51 Nurse b Berlin Germany BNS; John Cohen son u 19 Lab General b Greenwich, Kent; Philip Cohen son 13 b Greenwich, Kent
This raises some questions- was Marcus/Marks already dead pre 1881 census if so, where is the death record; is the 1886 death record cited by several family trees related to the same Marcus/Mark- there are no specific details of the death certificate which suggests the researchers may not have a copy and have made a supposition that this individual is the husband of Emma; did Marcus leave Emma and the reference to her being a widow is incorrect. As I suggested before a copy of the 1886 would indicate one way or the other if the individual is the husband of Emma ( providing of course the record gives additional data which may not be the case if Marcus was living another life).

You referred to the death of a Mark/Marks Cohen buried in Lauriston Cemetery- Cemetery Scribes site has a photograph of the tombstone and inscription of Marks ( Mark) Cohen died 14 Dec 1862 GRO Dec qtr 1862 Whitechapel 1c 309 Person ID 12013- this would not appear to be the husband of Emma if he still alive in the 1871 census.

The Marks Cohen who died 1886 was according to the Probate records a widower when he died so I dont think this is your Marcus.
