Jenjen, sorry it's taken so long. Have obtained records but unfortunately not his ground crew unit; just dates in S.Rhodesia (and something that I can't read). Nothing on back of photos so at a loss - would be a shame if these couldn't be shared. Do you know an RAF ground crew site with a photo gallery? Regards

Hi, my father was there I think before the war and definately afterwards, taking a Vulcan into Salisbury. His name was David Campbell Gordon, and his navigator was Barry Higgs.

Hi penny59,
Have you tried the following website:
https://
tonyhawesraf.multiply.com/photos/album/8/RAF_Thornhill_1951_-_1953
Plenty of photos in the album and may be some people that your father knows.
Sorry if this reply is a bit late for his 80th, but I have only just found this site.Last edited by Jan1954; 08-12-2011 at 5:27 PM. Reason: Website has links to commercial outlets. Please read the Terms of Service.

Hello,
My Dad (Lofty Cooper) was at Cranbourne during WWII. He married Dot Gush whilst there and my brother Michael (1946) and I (David 1947) were born there. Not sure what photo's I can find but eBay currently offering photo album of Cranbourne.
Best wishes,
Dave

Hello All
Phgm, my grandfather was also in 237 Squadron, seconded there as a Warrant Officer. His name was Cyril Newton but your father would probably have known him as 'Ginger' (yes-he had red hair!) My Dad told me he was then posted to Nairobi and Khartoum in the Sudan, then Heliopolis Air Base in Cairo. He contracted blackwater fever in Cairo and almost died, so was sent home to Rhodesia. He was then posted to the Central Mechanical Unit in Bulawayo and promoted to Pilot Officer. I think he was part of the ground crew? Sadly he died when I was very young, so I only have vague memories of him, but he was a very gentle, lovely man.

Cranbourne 237 Squadron
Hi Tinker and all,
Sadly my father has now passed away and I would love to know if there is anyone who has photos from Cranbourne and or the 237 Squadron as my father might just be in one of them! His name again is Paul Hendrik Fick and he was also at Norton base for a short period. He shared a tent with Ian Smith during the war and was in Cairo and Alexandria. I also have a small photo of grounded planes in B&W and looks like there has either been a snow storm or it could be sand? Not sure as there are no captions attached to the photo. My father was also mentioned in a RAF magazine which was passed on to me here in Australia about his time in the 237 Squadron when he escorted Lord Trenchard. Would love any info or photos out there and you can contact me vie email :

Paula, I will email my dad and ask if he has any photos from my grandfather's time in 237 Squadron. My grandfather was a keen photographer, so it's possible we do have pics in his old photo albums.
