    Question HORTON - DEAL BIRTH

I am having great difficulty in tracking the birth of Catherine Horton c1858. Shows in all census entries as being born in Deal. Have tried Eastry entries and also Elham, but no results. Have also tried different surnames as I know sometimes entries can get misread. Does anyone have any other ideas I might try please?

Hello there she is 3 on the 1861 census wth her widowed mother Ann Maria (Andrews) Horton visiting her sister Catherine (Andrews) Jamieson living as the Toll Gate Collecter in Eastry, they are branches in my tree, I have not researched the birth, however they did live preveously in Canterbury (1851 Simmonds Row Wincheap) George Horton was with her there but must have died by 1861. Also her mother Ann Maria goes on to remarry(George Sackree) and Catherine remains with her Aunt Catherine 1871 census shows her at 13 with her Widowed Aunt and her son James 22 who is a Publican in Bowberry st Sandwich.

I also have her as Catherine Emma Horton b Mar 1858 Deal
The Free BMD have an Emma Horton Jan-Feb-Mar 1858 THANET Vol 2a Page 615

I am at Canterbury Archives in a couple of weeks I can try and check there if you like?

    Hi Koops

Can I ask where you got the Catherine Emma Horton from - I have been searching for details of this birth since I began my family tree but with no success. If it is not too late and you have already been to the Archives, I would be very grateful if you can find anything out.

    Hi Peter
Marriage Certificate shows her as Catherine Horton 19 married Henry Pay 22 (4th March 1877 - St Peter's Church, Sandwich) father shown as George Andrews (which is incorrect - he was Horton - Andrews was mother's maiden name)

Since my original posting on this, I have since discovered that George Horton could not have been Catherine's father as he died in 1855. There seems to be a gap between his death and the 1861 census when Catherine (incorrectly shown as Norton) shows up (aged 3, born in Deal) with her mother in Sandwich.
I have searched through so many records using all variations of the surname that I can think of but still come up with nothing.
If anyone has any ideas on any other searches I could make I would be very grateful.

help, from my pervious post? I would suggest this is most likely the birth you are looking for.

I am not deep into that side of the family at the moment, having recently found 6 first cousins I am a bit busy with them. However I am sure to return to the Kentish roots again soon. Good luck with your research.

    Hi Koops

I did check these out - I have a copy of the Emma Horton B/C here, which unfortunately does not relate - father was William and mother Charlotte Horton.

Have you any info on where you got the Catherine Emma Horton b1858 Deal from? I can find nothing despite extensive searching.

    Question CATHERINE HORTON (born MILLER)

I believe I have at last discovered the elusive Catherine Horton's birth. I now have a birth cert which shows Catherine Miller born 14.09.1857 - mother Ann Maria Miller (formerly Andrews - which was her original maiden name) and father Robert Miller a Cpl in the 79th Foot Regm. Born at Turnpike House, Deal (Ann Maria's sister and husband were known to have been Tollgate Keeper/Collectors). Christened at Walmer.
I believe there has been a third marriage here of which I was previously unaware. The problem I now have is that I can find no marriage record between Robert Miller and Ann Maria Andrews (or even Horton as she was after first marriage) throughout the whole of Kent.
Ann Maria's address is shown on Catherine's birth cert as Spring Gardens, Wincheap Street, Canterbury.
Does anyone have access to the St Mildred's marriage entries between 1855 and 1857? I believe this may be the most likely place for the marriage.
Any help at all on this would be much appreciated.

    There probably wasn't one.

Does anyone have access to the St Mildred's marriage entries between 1855 and 1857?
Very little point, I'm afraid, if there's nothing in the GRO indexes.
