Interested to hear from any researchers of the Newman family on Portland, or anyone who has any suggestions about finding records that may record employees in the quarries.
My line seem to have migrated from Portland to Weymouth. Tentative male line is John (?Ayles) Newman born c.1802, Portland, mariner and father Thomas Newman of Portland, stonemason.

Newman of Portland, Dorset
Hey Limeywesty if you are descended from John Ayles NEWMAN we are distant cousins.
So, hi Cousin!
I have been working on our tree for quite a few years now. I got stumped in the direct ancestral line - since 1974 in fact when the Portland registers were still held at the church - but I have been pursuing the branches sideways and downwards since then, plus the various marriage lines.
I sense in your post that you are not 100% sure about your John Ayles NEWMAN descent. Maybe I can help.
If you want to keep it private get back to me on shipshaper@hotmail.com.
In all my years of Newman digging you are only the fourth other serious researcher of our family I have come across. For reference, my Mother's line boasts at least 30 of them down the years.

I am doing some research for an elderly lady and part of the information that I have is that she has a connection with a Robert Andrews NeWMAN (bn 1840 Weymouth) and Miriam Sarah MUSSELLWHITE (bn 1844 Hamworthy). I believe I have traced the NEWMAN side back to Thomas and Ann AYLES 9marr 1792) though William NEWMAN (1806). Would this be anything to do with your family?
regards
richard

Hi Richard,
These names ring bells, but I will have to check my notes to be sure as I have only just unearthed bits of information on this part of the family, mostly using online records and with some help from Tony below (or above)!

trudibeaumont, Robert Andrews NEWMAN b.1840 was also my great-grandfather. So how do you fit into our family tree?
