Default WW1 Records destroyed in Quebec

Last week a fire in Quebec destroyed the War Museum and all artifacts and archival records that they stored there. A big blow to all those searching for Canadian war vets in Quebec! They say that they will rebuild but the records are lost!

More burnt archives, so nothing new there then.

Why does it keep happening. Lack of money, lack of appropriate management, disinterest by government at all levels ?

I know that I am one of those who whinge and whine about the "A-Team" but perhaps it is fast approaching the time when they should be handed the task of digitising and storing all of the worlds archives.

Maybe so Peter! Maybe the A team should take over the world's archive - Talk about monopoly and dictatorship! Do they keep their digitised stuff underground like the LDS?

But there is always that risk of fire anywhere these archives are stored. Backups would have to be made and kept in multiple places. Having sprinkler systems would only cause more damage unless the articles were kept in fireproof safes. There would be a huge cost involved.

Look at what happened with the fire at Windsor Castle a few years ago. The taxpayers had to ultimately pay for the restoration didn't they?

The A Team and LDS are one and the same, as are the majority of the large genealogy sites such as Rootsweb and Genforum, much of the software, such as Legacy is theirs too, hence their desire to submit one's site and or info.
