    Default Removal of Brock Family

My husband's Brock ancestors spent a lot of time being shunted from one workhouse to another. Fortunately for me, some years ago, I was able to extract several settlement and removal orders for them at the Greater London Record Office as was (now the Metropolitan Archives). One such settlement examination has puzzled me for some time, and I thought I'd see if anyone out there can throw any more light on it.
George Brock and his family underwent a "voluntary examination" in December 1815 which declared they were to be removed to the Parish of St Mary Lambeth back to "their" Parish of St Giles, Camberwell. (This was the regular route of the Brocks, I think they were smitten with Camberwell.......)
In April 1816 there was another "voluntary examination" of Sarah Brock, wife of George Brock, which reads - "The examinent upon her oath saith that she hath heard her husband say that he hired himself as a yearly servant about forty years ago unto Mr Thomas Clark of South Lambeth in the Parish of St Mary Lambeth in the County of Surrey at the yearly wage of 24 pounds and continued in the service for the space of 2 years and 6 months. This deponant further saith that she hath four children namely Ann aged 11 years, Matilda aged 8 years, John aged 6 years and Henry aged 4 years. This deponant further saith that her husband is now in confinement and that she hath heard him say that he hath done no act to gain him a subsequent settlement, that she is poor and became chargeable to the Parish of St Giles."
I am presuming that the "in confinement" means George was in prison? If so, any ideas about how to find out where and why? I think the words needle and haystack might spring to mind, but I thought someone might have a bright idea

    Best wishes
    Ann

If you have not already done so, try this page on the Ancestry Website, you will need to pay to view the actual record, but the 1816 Brock, could be the one you are looking for. George, Sarah, Ann, Matilda, John & Henry are common names in my Brock Family, but I am about one generation short in my tree of this time period.

    Firstly, welcome to BG Steven!

Goodness, I had forgotten that post - and I can't believe it was made in 2004..... I had found the settlement and removal documents at the London Metropolitan Archives (or, the Greater London Record Office as it was known when I used to go there) so I had all the information but not copies of the actual documents. Since they have been made available on that well-known site, I have downloaded them and found a couple of others which I hadn't seen previously.

I have also discovered that George was indeed in prison, having been convicted of larceny at the Surrey Lent Assizes in 1816.

I do have quite a lot of info on the Brocks - they were quite a confusing bunch, most of them being given two Christian names and then never being able to decide in which order they would use them. Did your Brocks come from the Camberwell/Peckham/Lambeth area of London?

    Best wishes
    Ann

    Hi Ann
Thanks for the welcome, I found the site by accident while searching for info on the Web about an Organisation for a Friend and just thought I would put in Brock and see what came up.
I knew the Prison info was available on Ancestry but don't have a current subscription at the moment so couldn't actually view the entry. With the Bank balance being very unhealthy at the moment I tend to subscribe every so often, I do the same with Genes Reunited having full access for six Months and then a break of six Months, My Tree is on Genes Reunited.
I confirm my Brocks did come from the Camberwell/Peckham/Lambeth area, for some reason switching between George Elias Brock and Elias George Brock seemed quite popular with the Family.
My Name is Steven Turner but my Mum ... is nee Brock, I was Born in St Giles's Hospital and Christened in St. Lukes Camberwell and lived in Peckham for the first couple of Years of my life. From the 60's most of the Brocks moved away either to Wandsworth or Abbey Wood and a few emigrated to Australia.
My Tree goes back to a John Brock Born about 1809, this date could be 10 years or so out, he was born in Lambeth and in 1843 was living in Camberwell, he could possibly be the Son or a Nephew of your George Brock. He had 11 Children, four of whom were named, Ann, Matilda, John and Henry possibly after his Siblings or his Cousins!
If you have access to Facebook and search for "The Brock Family Peckham" you will find 44 Brock descendants and some photos.
You can contact me direct on steventurner1 AT gmail DOT com and any info you have would be much appreciated. Regards Steven
