Hello my name is Toni Ferris and I am researching my family history.
I have information in regards to my great grandmother Mary Murray who was born in either Girvan or Dalrymple around 1860s.
She married James Willacy of Lancashire England on 9 February 1885.
They immigrated to Greytown New Zealand.
It is before this time that I am trying to trace.
I am looking for information in regards to Mary Murrays birth and parents.
If anyone has any details I would be very appreciative if you could help me.
Thanks
Toni

Try ScotlandsPeople it's pay-to view but should have a record of your Ayr born Granny.

Hi Toni
You don't mention if you know for certain the parent names of your grgrannnie or if she had any siblings. Unless you have the parent names from a DC from NZ then the best to hope for is her dad's name and occupation from her MC in Lancashire. You really need identifiers like this in order to be certain you've found the correct birth in Scottish statutory records. Like Joette indicates a search on scotlandspeople should get you the information you seek from Ayrshire.
Best wishes
Jean

Toni the McDowells of Girvan are mine! They are an involved complicated tree which I have yet to unravel.Jane is not a name I have come across though was she/her Mother/Father a Weaver of some type?
MyG- Great-Granny was Robina Mcdowell daughter of Agnes McDowell.-she is listed on the 1841 Census as Robina McKinley with no sign of her father who is variously named as John or James.
Will do some more delving to see if there is any connection to your Jane.

Still looking as I said before they are a complicated lot.Not prone to marrying & using differing names throughout their lives!
I am still trying the Censuses to try to locate them as neighbours. I am suspecting they may have been non-Church of Scotland as there are no or no surviving Parish Records.
Will keep looking!
What a pity she wasn't born 1855-what a wealth of detail that would have held with marriage date, other children etc.Last edited by joette; 23-06-2008 at 5:33 PM. Reason: Spelling
