    Default Confused Aussie

George Williams - my great-great-great grandfather, (born about 1792) m. Elizabeth Davey (born abt. 1796) somewhere in Cornwall. I know of one son Edward Williams (born 29/10/1827) St. Just, m. Jane Clemens (born 13/06/1828) St. Just. Can anyone help me with infor. on other children of George and Elizabeth Williams and of any children from Edward and Jane Williams born in Cornwall. Edward Williams came to Australia, (date not known) his wife and son (William George) came here around 1865.
I am also seeking info. on Jane Clemens, i.e. her parents, siblings, etc.
    Hope someone can help.

    Cheers from Oz

    Hi fellow Victorian!
    1861 Census

    St Just, Cornwall
    RG9/1597 Folio 90 Page 19

    Catherine 3
    Edward 34 Head Tin Miner
    Jane 29
    John 7
    Mary J 9
    William 9 months

I will keep checking for any other info.
Hope this little bit helps. It would appear to be the correct family.
    Cheers

There is a marriage in...... Penzance 9 261
    December quarter 1848

    Jane Clemens
    Edward Williams

Actually the above family may not be correct as they were still living in Cornwall in 1871 . I could not find them in 1881. If you have your family coming to Australia in 1865 this must be another Williams family with the same names.

If you purchase the marriage certificate that would give you the name of Jane's father . That would then give you something definate to work on. I have found a few Jane Clemens in the 1841 census but without a fathers name I cannot tell you which is correct.
There was a death for a George Williams in 1840 and I cannot find him in 1841 or 1851 yet.

George Williams married Elizabeth Davey at St Just in Penrith on 14th June 1814 - the whole transcript of the marriage is on the West Penrith Resources Website.

    https://west-penwith.org.uk/index.htm

According to the site, a transcript of baptisms 1708 -1840 has been done by Pam Drake and is available at Parish Chest.

same web site has Edward and Jane's marriage in 1848, also in St Just - her father is James Clemens, miner. Both Edward and Jane were from Bosavern. A full transcript of the marriage - the same information as you would get if you purchased the certificate.

Thanks for this info. Some confusion here as I have info. that says Edward/Jane Williams had children:
William George WILLIAMS - born 23/11/1854
James Clemens WILLIAMS - born about 1869 Sandhurst, Vic. Aust.
John Clemens WILLIAMS - born about 1871 Victoria, Aust.
Joseph Clemens WILLIAMS - born about 1892 Victoria Aust.
Edward WILLIAMS - born in Victoria, Aust.

have not found any info. regarding Catherine, John, Mary J., William (baby).
Edward Williams died 26/07/1888 isburried at Clunes, Ballarat Victoria with his wife Jane, who died 04/03/1903 and in buried with Edward at Clunes.

    Cheers,
    Lorraine, Ferntree Gully, Victoria.

Thanks for this info., but I think this must be another family - I do know that Edward Williams married Jane Clemens at St. Just, Cornwall on 30/10/1848 and really wanted to find out the children born in Cornwall of this marriage.
Have some info. but it is confusing.

    Cheers, Lorraine

Thank you for confirming the info. Am not sure how to go about getting the info. regarding children born in Cornwall of Edward/Jane Williams. The info. I have states there were 5 children but I do not know who was born in Cornwall and who were born here in Australia - the dates I have jump from 1854 to 1892 and later.

Still hitting brick walls but will keep trying.

    Thanks, Lorraine

Yes Lorraine as I mentioned in the second post the family I found is definately not right.
On IGI however information which would appear to be documented and therefore I would expect reliable.
States Knape Street, Long Gully as place of death and lists Edward as a miner(gold obviously!) IGI has the burial at Eaglehawk, a little way from Clunes but maybe that was the name of the district.

Parents of Jane listed as James Clemens b 1798 St Just, died 1849 St Just
    and Grace Rowe b 1799

Parents of James Clemens listed as "rudrum" (obviously the transcriber had trouble with this name!) born 1768 died 1843 and Alice White born 1768 St Just died 1844 St Just.Marriage 1791

I will try and find the name of James father (rudrum!) on the 1841 census.

    Cheers

    Lightbulb

In 1841 I found Alice with John. So obviously rudrum is John!
    .................................................. ..................................
Also in 1841 -Clemens famly with Jane. HO107/144 11

James 40 Head Ag. and Tin Miner
    Grace 40
    Elizabeth 15
    William 15 Tin Miner
    Jane 13
James 10 Tin Miner (how sad is that?)
    Nicholas 8
    John 6
    Richard 4
    Grace 2
    .................................................. ...........

    1851HO107/1919/236 39

    Grace 51 Housekeeper
    William
    James
    Nicholas
    John
    Richard
    Grace
    All boys are tin miners
    .................................................. ................

Now here is a possible answer for one brick wall.

    1861 RG9/1597/91/21

Grace Clemens Head 61 Tin Miners widow
Jane Williams daughter 31 married Tin miners wife
Edward Williams nephew 12 Tin dresser
    Elizabeth Williams niece 10
    William George Williams nephew 6

Now I am sure the census man has got his relationships mixed up as often did happen. Surely those three children would belong to Jane if you know that William George is her son although here called a nephew!
All the children were born in St Just.
The birth of Edward would fit in with Jane's marriage date.
    Hope this helps
    Marj.

    Clunes, Ballarat Victoria
Clunes and Ballarat are different places.
Long Gully and Eaglehawk are suburbs of Bendigo.
