    Smile Place names

    Hi
I am hoping that someone could help with some Kent place names (I can't access original census pages on A******y)

    1861 census has BECKTOWNE, KENT
    1871 census has BECKMSHOURNE, KENT

can't find them on my up to date maps, are they old towns that may have disappeared or are they just the wrong spellings by the enumerator.
    Thanks
    Sandy

I live in Kent also, and I agree that it looks like Bekesbourne. I can't find any trace of anything remotely like the names you mention. It looks like a case of mistranscription, to me.

    Hi
Thanks for your help. I have

Mary Ann Warren b1831 Maidstone, Kent she married
Frederick Lawrence b 1828 (1861) Becktowne and (1871) Beckmshourne, Kent

I have found them Living in Bromley on the 61 & 71 Census

On 71 he is a retired builder, do you know if there is anyway one can find out who owned houses at this time, as I know his daughter had a private income of 30 shillings a week from property left to her, when she died this passed to her husband. I can't find a will for her father Frederick.

Ok, now I am confused. Is Frederick in Kent, other than Bromley, in the 1861 and 1871 ?

Your place name could be Beckenham..

The place is the Parish of Beakesbourne

I think that Frederick was there in 1841,

It is an old name and goes back to Domesday records
