    Hiya
Not sure if this will be of any help. I found info on the home my mum was in on this website even though it wasn't a workshouse as such.

I don't know if this is any help, but the Birmingham orphanage where I found relatives, was the Josiah Wedgewood Orphanage, which was a large, well-known establishment. Not sure when it closed down.

I know there was a childrens home at Longbridge Birmingham opposite to the old Rover Works. This was Nazareth House.

    Default Children's Homes

There was also the Middlemore Home which sent many children to Canada from 1865 onwards. Not sure when this practise ceased.

    Good Luck

Re Last post the practice of sending children abroad lasted I believe until 1960's I must admit this was a shock.
I am not sure if Birmingham Central Library can help and non members can put adverts in the local family history society magazine for a small fee.
Please let us know how you get on.

    Default Middlemore Homes - Birmingham

Hi folks, just to add to this thread, I have been tracing a relative who was at one stage an "orphan" at the Middlemore Home for Children in Birmingham. All of the records that relate to the Children's Emigration Scheme under which this establishment and lots of others in the UK sent children to the colonies, mainly Canada and Australia, are often difficult to locate. Many establishments would still rather forget that they ever participated in this disgraceful program. The Middlemore records are now held in the Birmingham Central Library.

    Regards, Peter F.
