I am trying to sort out the relationship between various families from Longbridge Deverill who emigrated to the Cape of Good Hope in 1820 as part of the Government sponsored emigration scheme. I have a feeling that Edward FORD's Party of settlers was one big extended family. If anyone can help with links I would be very grateful.
The following definitely went to South Africa on board the Weymouth in 1820:
Ephraim DICKS, widower (he had married Mary WHATLEY on 16 Feb 1806) and his two children, Ephraim (16) and Joseph (5). Ephraim Senior died on board.
James DICKS and his wife Dinah (nee FORD) who married on 25 Dec 1815
James DICKS, always referred to as James DICKS Senior (but not the father of the above James DICKS) and his wife Jane (nee HALL). Jane Hall was his second wife and died on board the Weymouth as the ship reached Cape Town. James' first wife was Jane CROFTS and his children by his first wife emigrated with him: Uriah, James, Joseph, Jonah and Eliza.
Robert HARRIS (17) nephew of James DICKS Senior
Edward FORD, the nominal Party leader, and his wife Jane with their children James (17) John (16) Patience (13) and Elizabeth (11)
Robert MILES of Erlestoke and his wife Ann (nee DICKS) who married in Longbridge Deverill on 7 Nov 1817. They had a two year old son William who died at sea.
Elijah PAYNE (25) and his wife Mary (22) and infant daughter Mary
Joseph RALPH of Crockerton and his wife Elizabeth (nee CURTIS) and children Joseph (3) and infant Mary, who died at sea.
Richard RALPH of Crockerton and his wife Elizabeth (nee MILLS) and children Harriet (4) and Samuel (1)
The following were on the original sailing list in 1819 but did not emigrate in 1820:
George DICKS (27) with wife Sarah and children Ann (2) and Thomas (1)
James CURTIS (24) with wife Susannah and children George and Patience (5) and Dinah (1)
William DICKS (38) with wife Diana and children Mary (14) James (13) Sophia (12) William (11) and Patience (8)
James CROFTS (25) with wife Hannah and children Joseph (3) and Harry (1).
It is believed that James DICKS Senior (whose first wife was Jane CROFTS)had a sister who married a James CROFTS.
The Dinah FORD who married the younger James DICKS and emigrated was the daughter of Edward FORD, the Party leader. Another daughter Maria FORD is supposed to have married a Benjamin DICKS.
The RALPH brothers were also supposed to be blood relations to the DICKS, but I don't as yet know what the link was.
I have a lot of information on what happened to those who emigrated, but would dearly like to sort out the Wiltshire end.
