Hi all,
has anyone heard of surnames being changed, particularly in the early seventeen hundreds?
for example an entry I have seen recently is
"Thomas Cutler alias Smith",
I have never seen this before, has anyone else had surnames changes like this, and what would be the rationale behind it?
thanks in advance
Paul

Paul,
Always worth using the search facility to see if it's been discussed before.
There seem to be several hits.
This one is very recent
