We are looking for any info on the above; this is what we have so far:-
1881 Census 74 Cambridge St, Plymouth
John Hill - Gunner's Mate RN - age 37 - b Harford
Sarah Hill - Wife - age 35 - b Plymouth
John Hill - Son - age 9 - b Plymouth
Thomas Hill - Son - age 8 - b Plymouth
Laura E Hill - Dau - age 2 - b Plymouth

Laura Edith's Birth Cert 20 Nov 1878 - 74 Cambridge St, shows mother's maiden name as Berry.

There are 4 other HILLs with a North Huish birthplace who could be related to John HILL snr, a Henry b c1815, a Richard b c1809, a Robert b c1824 and a Susan b c1830. There is also a William b c1803 who is living in North Huish but was born in Ugborough. He has his mother Elizabeth b Blackawton c1777 living with him. If you would like full details, let me know.

I can find no Sarah BERRY of the correct age either born or living in Plymouth. There is a Sarah BERRY born c1845 but she is living in Exeter and born in Marylebone.

We are looking for any info on......
John Hill - Gunner's Mate RN - age 37 - b Harford

When possible, you should look for his service record in The National Archives (TNA) at Kew. This will provide a lot of detail to assist you; and will also confirm whether or not he was in the service in 1891 (this may help with your other query about a census lookup in Southport).

Gunners service records at TNA are in document class ADM196/30 for entries between 1855-1873 (surnames beginning D-T) and for 1873-1882 are in ADM196/31 (all surnames). There is an index to these in ADM196/33.

You might also try The Navy List (partial runs available in many larger libraries/County Record Offices and Local Studies Libraries). It is a long time since I had to check them, but I know that Carpenter's Mates are included for the 19th century; it may well be that Gunner's Mates are also included.

3. Peggy, we do have the 1891 (and 1901) Census details - it is the 1861/1871 records that we are lacking - perhaps the Ancestry site will be able to give us more (when we get round to subscribing!!)
