    Default Gough family in Manchester

Hello: I am trying to find information on my ancestor, Henry Gough, who married Mary Godwin in Manchester Cathedral in 1816. The marriage certificate gives no age of either, nor parents' names. I know they had at least one son, Joseph, b.1817, who emigrated to the US in 1843 on the ship Severn out of Liverpool. There is an entire family of Henry and Mary Gough resident in Prestwich in 1841, but my Joseph was married by that time and so would not have been living at home. Therefore, I cannot tell if the Prestwich Goughs are indeed my family. If anyone there might help me along one of two lines I would be very greatful. Line 1. The father and place of birth of my Henry who married in 1816 or...Line 2. The maiden name of the Prestwich Mary Gough or other information about that family that would either confirm or deny a relationship. Thanks. I do appreciate your time.

Presumably the information you gave came from a copy of the parish register of the Collegiate & Parish Church of Manchester. Ages and the names of the fathers of the bride and groom were normally not included until July 1837 on parish registers (some churches did include this information, but not the time or place to discuss this). Even after July 1837 this particular church only noted the ages as "Full" or "Minor" for a couple of year.

This church has 99.99% of its marriages and baptisms covered by the IGI for this period. It appears that this couple did not have any more children baptised at this church. However, if you think that they moved to Prestwich, then a search should be made of St Mary's Parish Church records. That could be a long search as the church was fairly busy as the parish was very large.

UK: Thanks very much for your help and insight. I had always wondered how many of the records for Manchester Cathedral were represented in the IGI, and now you have answered that questions. There were some other Goughs born to a Henry and Mary and christened in Manchester Cathedral; one Abraham Gough, b. about 1819 and one Ann, born about 1821. These I have connected to the Prestwich Goughs. In fact, I have pretty much the entire Prestwich clan named and in sequence, I simply cannot connect them to my Henry and Mary. I have searched the pertinent St. Mary records that I could find on the web, but to no avail. I will keep searching. Meanwhile, thanks again for all of your help. I do appreciate it.

You are most welcome. I am sorry that I could not give any immediate help. however, Prestwich St Mary records are indexed by year and this could shorten your search.
