Martha Tattersall, Holt Mill, Newchurch, 1871

My ancestor Martha Tattersall (ne Disley) was married but there was no husband present at Holt Mill in 1871. She had 3 children Elizabeth Ann 12, John Robert 9 and George William Henry 7. She took on the name of the lodger James Whittaker, I don't think they married but had a son James Whittaker. i would really like to find out more about James Whittaker senior, who was born Newchurch in 1845/46

Martha was born in Carnforth in 1849 and I think she had a brother Richard.

Any information about Waterbarn or these people and a possible connection between Whittaker and Trickett would be appreciated

Surely it must be possible to get the birth cert for one of the three children.

You have names, ages, and locations of where the birth occurred from the 1871 census.

That would give you both their father's name and the mother's maiden name.

Thanks Anthony, I have already been down that route. I've discovered that Martha's maiden name is Disley. She married a John Tattersall in 1858 in Bury (I'm in the process of getting the marriage certificate). Hopefully I can locate them from this. I am now interested in the Disley connection and what happened to John Tattersall

Hi Chris

You asked about Fearns Hall. I don't have much and what I have is from "A Bacup Miscellany" . It was published in 1972 to celebrate 90 years of the granting of a Charter. It is full of poems, observations and stories, many in dialect, all by local writers.

There is a brief discription. The datestone is 1696 over the porch of the original part. An extension was built in 1830 on the site of a building of 1557.Ashworths once lived there.
I remember it as being really run down in the 1960's. We used to run past it on our cross country runs from the grammar school. Some of the names you mentioned will still be around in the area.

The book has some photos and pictures in. It has a SBN 0 9502527 0 0. Compiles by Harry craven and Ronald Y. Digby edited by Kenneth F. Bowden (the then librarian).
