Unhappy Thomas/Theodor Thoel - Same person?

Hello all! and Happy New Year!

As many heads are better than one (especially when it's as dense as mine!) could I have your opinion please?

My Mary Elizabeth Thoel married Richard Daniel Housbey in 1905. On her marriage certificate she named her father as Thomas Thoel - Warehouseman, and her age as 23 - born in 1882. I duly search through the index and lo and behold Mary Elizabeth Thoel born 1882. Both marriage and birth are in Liverpool which appear consistent so I order the certificate!

Having ripped open the envelope this morning I find Mary Elizabeth Thoel - but born to Theodor and Johanna Thoel (nee O'Donnell) Theodor being a Provision dealer!

I did do a search for Thomas Thoel when I got the marriage certificate and came up empty - did she anglicise her father's name or is it a different lass entirely?

Fresh ideas welcome - I don't want to "adopt" her if she isn't mine!

    Rina

    Hi Rina
There are only 8 THOELs listed in England & Wales in the 1901 census, all your family living in Liverpool, so I think it is a pretty safe bet that Mary anglicized her father's name.

    Hello Rine,

I agree with Wirral. The 1901 census shows him as being born a British Subject in Germany.

Thanks Wirral, I was wondering where to look next if it wasn't her!

    Thanks Jan! She's mine!

Interestingly enough the family seems to have a habit of 'adjusting' names. When Theodor marries Johanna O'Donnell in 1881 she's just Hannah! Unless the registrar couldn't hear or wrote down what he thought she said!

Quite possible! I have an ancestor (Pharaoh Smith) who is enumerated as Sarah in the 1841 census! Pharaoh/Sarah in the flat Essex accent of the time...

    Hi Rina,
hope you get this message. I am in possession of a diary, from a young WW1 soldier from Everton, Liverpool, by the name of Charles Thoel. I think he may be a relative of your husbands? I live in Australia, but I am originally from Liverpool. A close friend of mine found the diary and gave it to me as I am a history teacher and have used the diary for many years in the classroom. I have always intended to track down this man's family and very recently came across this post. If you would like more information then please contact me on michelle DOT d DOT moore AT gmail DOT com

    Hi mmoore67 - welcome to Brit-Gen,

Unfortunately, Rina H has not visited the forum for a couple of years, although she is still a member. However, if you click on her user name a drop-down box appears that gives you the option of contacting her via private message or email.

By the way, talking of email, I have edited yours so that it is still readable but hopefully will deter the spammers who cruise websites looking for such things.

  10. The Following User Says Thank You to Jan1954 For This Useful Post:
