Both were born in Tunstall, Lancashire and immigrated to Canada
in 1928. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

These are probably the children of James Nelson YATES or his brother William Robert YATES, both innkeepers, blacksmiths & farmers of Tunstall. They both married SHEPHERDs, so you need to make sure that you have the correct parents of Edmond & Richard Nelson first.
You can order a copy of a full birth certificate from the General Register Office www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates That will give you the names of both parents, the maiden name of the mother & the occupation of the father. The GRO reference you got from freeBMD is the one you need. Always check the original image from freeBMD to make sure there isn't a transcription error. Certificates cost £7 each to order online.

Assuming that this is the correct family, they are easy to trace through the censuses from 1901 back to 1841. The family ran the Fenwick Arms Inn in Tunstall from at least 1871 to 1901. It is now called the Lunesdale Arms. You can find it on Google. Using the IGI, the YATES/YEATS family can be traced back to the 18thC.

I have rec'd the B. Cert. of my Edmond Yates b. 29th Apr. 1908 my Gfather.
His parents were Richard Thomas Yates b. 1882 and Emily Shuttleworth.

Richard Thomas Yates was the younger brother of James Nelson Yates b. 1867 and William Robert Yates b.1869.

Richard Thomas' father was James Yates b.1840 Kirby Lonesdale, Westmorland married Agnes Nelson
b.1876 Killington, Westmorland.

They lived at Fenwick Arms Inn at Tunstall.

Any information on this family and the Inn would be greatly appreciated.
