GRO is the Government Records Office to order documents. IONIAN would be the the file to order with the addition of vol and page #'s. Those are on the right side of the page beside the name you want. These would be from the National Archive Records. If I am wrong someone will correct me.

I recently ordered Army Birth Records from GRO and put down AB91 (army births file name) and the vol and page, plus the name I wanted, which must be spelled exactly like you see it, or they will reject it.

The Britsh occupied the Ionian Islands from 1815, following the defeat of Napoleon, until 1864.

    Thanks Vanessa and Peter,
I am trying to eliminate many unnecessary searches and knowing the dates we occupied is of great help. Also I know the GRO are very fussy with their applications but your comments are noted thanks again

Sorry Bob after getting your pm which jogged my brain and after re-reading my answer to this thread, I see I was pretty stupid. I did know that Ionian was the name of a ship but I was really brain dead when I responded. For that I humbly apologize. I give myself a

    Hi Vanessa
no need to feel guilty, only pleased to get some feedback. Unless you become a full member of findmypast the number of possibilities they throw up it becomes pointless using the voucher system. I am waiting to find time to visit Kew Record Centre to see if I can find more info on his military past; all I know at the moment he was a Chelsea Pensioner.
    Regards Bob

If I wasn't confused about what you're looking for, I'd be happy to try to advise. Actually the advice is pretty standard for overseas BMDs (including the Ionian Islands) and for Chelsea Pensioners.

    Hi Peter
sorry for confusion. I posted re this person in the Devon forum on 26/11/07 about Devonport area; to which I had some good replies. I also had advice to use findmypast to look for military details from you and up came this query re Ionian. If you get time to look at the devon forum I hope it will become clearer. I have little to go on George Elson other than he was born either in Devonport or Cheriton in 1835 (see different census info). I don't know his regiment, however, he became a chelsea pensioner eventually living in Woolwich London later in life.
    Regards bob
