    Default Researching AVERY

This is my first time on the Forum and after inadvertently posting to the main site I am re-posting to the Buckinghamshire forum.

I have been trying to find family connections to my g-g-grandfather John Abel Avery and I am hoping someone is able to give me a lead. I have been working on the problem for over 15 years and have not being able to find any family in England. A family member has provided a baptism record which we believe is his for 1802 (born 1800) at High Wycombe, Bucks., to a mother Francis Unknown and father William. I have also found a reference to a William and Francis wedding in the Philimore Parish Registers in Hillingdon. He was transported to Australia in 1822 and received his Certificate of Freedom in 1829 which stated him as being a chimney sweep. I have considerable amount of data from the Australian records, however the English records are much harder for me. On John Abel's death certificate it states he was an orphan and no parents are named. Any assistance will be received with much gratitude.

Hi....I don't know if this of any use or not, but worth mentioning.

AVERY, Frances Head, W 51 Lacemaker, b. Hambledon, BKM
AVERY, Ruth, Daur, U, 30, Lacemaker, b. Lukenor, OXF
AVERY, Willm. Son, U, 18, Chairmaker, b. West Wycombe, BKM
AVERY, Richard, Son, U, 16, Chair Polisher, b. West Wycombe, BKM
AVERY, Daniel, Son, U, 13, At Chairmaking, b. West Wycombe, BKM
Squires, Thomas, Lod. U, 15, Chairmaker, b. Thame, OXF
WALKER, Hd, M, 62, Labourer, b. Horsendon, BKM

WALKER, Sophia, Da, U, 23, Lacemaker, b. West Wycombe, BKM

WALKER, Maria, Da, U, 14, Chairmaker, b. West Wycombe BKM
MORECRAFT, Thomas, Lod, U, 21, Chairmaker, b. High Wycombe, BKM

As there was a Frances AVERY there, I wondered if this was part of the family?

There are quite a few Avery's in the 1851 Census in High Wycombe....if you want some more information, I will be happy to help where I can.

    Hello Glenys,

Thank you for the info from the 1851 Census. Although AVERY is a very common English name, a lot of the names you mention have continued to come down the family line. Most of my grandmother's family were carpenters and my grandmother was a seamstress so there is a possibility that there is a connection somewhere along the way. However, for the parents of John Abel Avery to be in the 1851 Census, they would have to be somewhere between 65 & 75 yrs of age. The Frances Avery listed in the 1851 census is an 'Avery' by marriage, but could be the widow of a deceased brother of John Abel Avery, anything is possible.

Although the Baptism records shows High Wycombe, Bucks., the parents could have moved around and may not even be in the same county.

    Hi Yvonne,

There were a lot of Averys, some in High Wycombe, and a lot with biblical names. I hope that you get some luck soon.
