Michael Walsh b abt 1842, Co Wexford, Ireland was in British Army up to and including 1878. Married Mary Elliott, b 1860 same b place and had son Michael John Walsh born Cape of Good Hope, Africa 1877. Another child Thomas b Ireland, the rest b England and is noted on 1881/1891 census.
My problem is I just go in circles with TNA. Can someone help me Please?
He was a boot/shoemaker in England and died sometime between 1891 and 1901 in Whitechapel. I have hit a brick wall here too as the death cert I got for Michael Walsh is wrong. I have also checked GRO for marriage but nothing. This is my grandfather and we can't find out anything about him.
I will never figure out TNA!
Vanessa

Vanessa, which death certificate did you get for Michael?
Was it 2a/322, Dartford, 2nd qrt of 1891.
I can see a family that sounds like them in 1891 they lived in Dartford, Kent.
What information do you have that moves him to Whitechapel?
As regards the TNA, you, me both. I suspect it becomes dead easy, when you know how

Mike Walsh
Hello Vanessa,
My company commander was named Michael Walsh. He was a Major in charge of 'A' company, 3rd battalion of the Parachute regiment. I met him at a reunion last year in Aldershot, in the south of England. He had finished up as a Major General. Also was at one time the Chief Scout for the Boy Scout movement.
Cheers

Mutley,
Death cert is 1901 16 July Westminster Union Workhouse - bricklayers' laborurer. Definitely the wrong one. My grandmother wrote some of her memories down and said that she remembers the monks in 1 room ministering to her dying father and the nuns in the next room ministering to her mother who was having Winifred. They lived in Whitechapel at that time. I have somewhat ascertained that Winifred was born 1898 and not the date my grandmother wrote down. I have confirmation of this thru the marriage cert for my aunt Winifred. I believe that her name is Winifred M.T. Walsh who married Leonard Phillips. She died in 1944 - bomb hit house. TNA and I do not get along and it doesn't help reading the search brochures!
Vanessa
Sorry, Mutley, I have the 1891 census and they did live in Dartford at that time. Winifred wasn't born yet. The only ones in 1901 I can find are Kate and Bridget(Daisy). My gmother Kate sent money home to Mary and all the children were able to go to school. Where I don't know.Last edited by v.wells; 05-12-2007 at 1:13 AM. Reason: Stupidity and forgetfulness

Mike
Can't possibly be mine. My grandfather was born 1842 and died before 1901. I just want to access any British/Irish Army information. It is possible that he married at English base and there may be a record as well as births at sea.

Some of my relatives did carry on the tradition - until the end of WW2. Those who survived had had enough!

According to GRO Army Births Indices, there is a Michael J Walsh, born Cape Town in 1876, to a father in the 3rd Regiment.
Assuming this is him, then Michael Walsh senior was in the 2nd Bn 3rd (East Kent) Regt, The Buffs, who were in South Africa at the time and a few years later took part in the Zulu War.

Where on earth, how on earth were you able to find this out. Is there magic involved here! Wonderful news! Sounds like my uncle. Michael Walsh sr. left the army soon after that. How do I get to see the records? Thanks so much Neil.

I think I need some detailed instructions to navigate to this info!Sadly, our friend Vanessa, passed away 29th. February 2012.

It may just be a coincidence and does not quite fit in with Grandmother's area or Winnifred's birth date at marriage but
There is the death of Michael Walsh, Dartford, 2nd qrt of 1891.
2a/322
The birth of Winifred Mary Walsh, Dartford, 2nd qrt of 1891
2a/514
They lived in Dartford in April 1891 in the census !!!
