My gandfather Harold Cecil Lane (1880 Thame Oxfordshire) left me 2 RFC artifacts which our family wishes to donate to a suitable museum. The first an the RFC wings embroidered in true colours on velvet - the second is a small ashtray like dish with the wings done in brass & coloured beads between to pieces of glass in the base (again true colours). We understood that my gandfather made these while a POW in WW1 - however the only record we can find miltary service is with the Navy between 1895 and 1907. We want to make sure we have all the facts right before we donate.
Any advise, guidance or information will be most welcome.

The RAF was formed on 1st April by the amalgamation of the Amry's ROyal Flying Corps (RFC, founded 1912) and the Royal Naval Air Service (founded 1914).
I would suggest that you try the RAF museum
http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/
regarding your grandather's kind wish.

Geoffers,
Thanks for the link - sounds like the place we'd want these to be placed.
