Hi,
I would like to introduce myself to you all and make new friends in the process too. My name is Moubarak Irshaad Calloo A.K.A Cocasse, I am Mauritian/British, I live in London and I work for the LSE. I have tried for a while to help tracking down my ancstors but to no avail. I sent some stuff to the General Register Office for Scotland on two occasions, the first time on 29/01/1999 and then on 10/01/2002. The reason why I tried the Scottish Office is because mum used to tell stories of her grandad with his Tartan kilt wandering around,so,she always thought of him being Scot. My other concern is I really don't know where exactly in England my greatgreatgreatgrandad John Michael Englebright was born but on the other hand I am sure that his son James Bartholomew Englebright was born in Madras(India) during the British Raj in 1837-1838. I don't know whether these informations will help but if there is anything else that you need for research please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do the best I can to assist. I really appreciate your time and co-operation and hope that things can get better in terms of family history especially my mum who is the only Englebright in Mauritius. I wish you all the best and God Bless.
Cocasse.
P.S.John Michael Englebright's wife name is Ann Marriet Hunter, hope this can be of any help to you for the research.

Welcome aboard Cocasse. You'll find the other members very helpful. They may not monitor this board. May I suggest that you post your inquiry on a specific board that covers the area your family is in and try to focus on one specific thing like a birth, death or a census year. Good luck with your research.

Hi Cocasse
Have you looked in Norfolk for the ENGLEBRIGHTs? In the censuses & the LDS website, nearly all of the ENGLEBRIGHTs come from that county.

I agree with Wirral I found a John Englebright born Jan/March 1842 in Mitford Norfolk, but I think that is not him the mothers name on the 1851 census is Maryanne,
however there are also
John Englebright abt 1791 Elmham, Norfolk, England Head Brisley Norfolk
View Record
John Englebright abt 1792 Northwold, Norfolk, England Servant Cranwich Norfolk
marriages
John Englebright 1849 Jan-Feb-Mar Shoreditch London, Middlesex
View Record
John Englebright 1869 Oct-Nov-Dec Mitford Norfolk

Hi Cocasse
The surname as given i.e. Engelbright seems to have only one hit on FreeBMD, a marriage in June quarter 1894 district of Hartlepool i.e. Christian T Engelbright.
On the 1881 census at FamilySearch there is only one Engelbright, a Katharin who was born in Bavaria in 1854.
There are not that many of that name when one looks at all resources on the FamilySearch site either.
There are lots of locations of the name Hunter too.
It may be that you need to have a look at the records of the East India Company, which I believe are at the British Museum.
Good luck

Oops

I really am going to have to go and get my eyes re-tested
aren't I!
My only defence is that if I make that sort of mistake, then parish priests, bureaucrats and the dreaded
census takers could just as easily record all sorts of perrmutations.
Moral - look under all the probably variations, like Englebrecht, Englebricht and so on!

Hi,
I would like to certify that my ancestors' family name is ENGLEBRIGHT without any doubt. I would like to thank each and everyone of you for the prompt responses and I really appreciate it. I still have a question regarding the Norfolk County, i.e, how do I get on the said site and how do I get info from the site? I don't want to sound silly but I am just a Newbie and I really need any help possible. Take care and God Bless.
Cocasse.

Whilst you may be positive that the spelling is as above, there are myriad examples of how names are misspelt by census takers / transcribers and so on - illiteracy was also quite common amongst many segments of society too.
As others have indicated that the name is common in Norfolk it may be worthwhile for you to make contact with the Norfolk Family History Society, their website is Norfolk FHS
Good luck
