    Smile MCDONALD LANARK

Hi, what an unusual name I am researching !!11 John McDonald born about 1818. he married Isabella Bant on 7 may 1854 at Presbeterian Church in Gorbals. They had a son John born on 9 Oct 1854 in Gorbals then a daughter Elizabeth on 22 Feb 1857 in Govan. The family came to South Australia arriving aboard the 'Melbourne" on 6 December 1858. his death certificate does not gives me a clue as to who his parents are or where he was born. I realise this is a long shot but hoping someone somewhere can help with finding him.
    Thanks for looking at this

Have you seen this possible match from the 1851 census?

Census: 1851: Parish: Gorbals; ED: 40; Line: 19
Address: 215 Main Street, Gorbals, Lanarkshire
-- Mary Cameron 55 Head born Glasgow Lanarkshire

-- John McDonald 34 Son Boiler Maker born Glasgow Lanarkshire
-- Robert Cameron 29 Son born Glasgow Lanarkshire
-- Jane Cameron 24 Daughter born Glasgow Lanarkshire
-- Daniel Cameron 18 Son Boiler Makers Apprentice born Glasgow Lanarkshire
-- Duncan Cameron 15 Son Errand Boy born Glasgow Lanarkshire

I'm afraid this entry doesn't tell you much and offers no explanation as to why John has a different last name from his mother. Perhaps she married or remarried at some time after John's birth.

    Regards,
    Trish

Scratch this one. This John McDonald is still living with his mother in the 1861 census.

Any idea what John did for a living in Scotland or later, in Australia?
