    Default Allford Family

HI folks, my name is Richard Hallford. I have only recently (today is 14.10.2007) started my family Tree/History. I would appreciate any help, or just general chat on the Allford/Hallford family tree. I am originally from Lanarkshire in Scotland, but emigrated to Australia in 1978.
My great great grandfather was Richard Hallford. His Father was Levi Hallford/Allford. HIS Father was Edward Allford/Hallford and came from Devon. Edward spent most of his life in Dawley, Shropshire, England.
I am interested in any information in relation to this family line, especially knowledge of Brothers and Sisters. Related to this family name is also Steventon. I believe that there may have been inter family relationships and perhapsh swapping of family surnames.
I encourage any chat or discussion, with an open mind on this subject/Family.
Hoping to hear from you soon
    Kindest Regards, Richard Hallford.

    Default Hallford/Steventon

    Hi Richard,
Welcome to this forum and the hobby of genealogy. You seem to know a lot for someone who has just started out! If you are using information handed down the family make sure you check it out.

Edward Hallford died in 1875. He was born about 1800. On 1851 census it gives birthplace unknown and in 1861 it states Salop. I cannot find him in 1871 yet.
On 1851 'Levi' is named Clary aged 7. This almost certainly has to be him because he is Levi by 1861 aged 17 and there is no Clary in 1861.
In 1861 a Thomas Steventon, grandson aged 11 is living with Edward. A marrige is recorded in 1849 Apr/Jun at Madeley between Richard Steventon & Susannah Alford.

If you want any further information please ask.

    Cheers Jeremy

    Default Hallfords Dawley

    Hello Richard and Jeremy,

My mother's maiden name was Hallford; not a common name with double "l".

My great great grandfather was John Hallford born in Dawley in 1831. I don't have any information about his parents or siblings but there has to be a family tie-up somewhere; Dawley wasn't a big place.

John Hallford was a grocer but the family moved to Brampton Brierlow and his sons all went into steel works or coal mines.

That's probably not of much use to you but it's interesting making contact with fellow researchers.

    Best regards,
    Dennis

    Default John Hallford

    Hi Dennis,

Having traced your John Hallford back throught the censuses, his most likely year of birth seems to be 1827. His marriage is registered and the certicate will name his father.

    John Hallford & Elizabeth Easpley Oct/Cec 1846 Dudley vol 18 page 444

I have listed Elizabeth Easpley as the bride because she is the only Elizabeth listed but the certificate will prove it either way.

    Default Hallford with two 'L"s

Hi Dennis. Welcome. Ive not used this site much but will help where ever I can. Feel free to ask any questions.
I have been doing research on my family name on and off and have slowly got back to Devon. My GGG Grandfather was Edward Alford. The name has changed several times with several census info and birth/marriage certs. However it is definitely Alford. Imagine this said in English cockney accent......"Elo gov, my name is Alford"
Perhaps that might appear to be a silly example, but Im convinced that with a lot of the population illiterate, pronunciation had a lot to do with spelling by the writer. This must have happened with the Census info.
My family's name changed for permanent, when Levi Hallford/Allford moved to Scotland. But prior to that, there were several spellings.
The Allford/Hallford family were involved in steel works and were spread around Dawley in Shropshire. I have also noticed in my research that while my Allfords were there, another family called Hallford was there also. I have not established a link as of yet but am working on it.
Also you might be interested in knowing that one John Hallford emmigrated to Boston, from Glasgow in 1908. He was living in Motherwell, Scotland, a steel town. There were other Hallfords there as well. Johns origin was also from England. Cant remember where just off hand. Im writing this in a hurry as I have to go to work, but feel free to start a dialoge. We can meet in a chat room if you like, or you can email me at r.hallford56(at)gmail.com
    Kindest regards, Richard Hallford.
