Default Phippard birth date registration difference

I have a William Strickland Phippard born Hastings who I have found on
    1881 Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 5636; Folio: 99; Page: 21
    1891 Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 225; Folio 116; Page 37
    1901 Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 277; Folio: 165; Page: 65

FreeBMD gives his birth registration in April May June 1862, but his Royal Navy record gives his date of birth 28th March 1861, a difference of over a year. Now as yet I cannot find him on the 1871 census and again as yet I have not got the birth certificate.
So my questions are can anyone find him on 1871 census, or could his family have been abroad which would account for the delay in registration or was that a normal amount of time to register a birth.
Did he lie on his Naval record.

Please note that on the freebmd entry George has been added to his name which has been taken from the entry above him.

    grateful for any help

The 1861 census was on the night of 7 April, so if the 28 March 1861 birth date on his naval record is correct, you should be able to find him on that census as well.
When did he join the Navy, and might he have said he was a year older just to get accepted?

His date of engagement is 28th march 1879, but he does have some earlier entries which I believe to be when he was training. I know it would be easier if I had his birth cert then I would have his parents names to track.

I would get his birth certificate first - this would clear things up a bit. In the 1861 census there only appears to be one Phippard households in Hastings:

    At St. Mary's, Hastings: RG9; Piece: 561; Folio: 56; Page: 22

    Charles Phippard 31
    Charlotte Phippard 24
    Charlotte M Phippard 2
    Julia A Phippard 5

    all born Swanage, Dorset

which would suggest Willliam was born in 1862, as per GRO index.

    Now what may just be a coincidence, but i think probably Charlotte was widowed and remarried as in 1871 census Class: RG10; Piece: 1032; Folio: 55; Page: 48;
George Eldridge 30 born Hawkhurst, Kent
Charlotte Eldridge 33 born Swanage, Dorset
William Eldridge 16 born Hawkhurst, Kent
Charlotte Strickland 12 born Swanage, Dorset
William Strickland 9 born St. Leonards, Hasting.

George Eldridge married Charlotte Strickland Sep quarter 1870 Brighton 2b 358.

However checking the 1861 census again, there is no Charlotte Strickland born Swanage, Dorset. And also in 1881 there is no Charlotte Strickland born Swanage, Dorset, or a William Strickland born Hastings.

But there is a Charlotte Maria Phippard in the birth indexes Mar 1859 Wareham 5a 306
and a Charles Phippard died June 1865 Wareham 5a 209

Many thanks for your efforts, as you said earlier I think I best get the birth certificate and get the facts rather than trying to second guess.

    Thanks again

    Regards

    Hi Wilkes_ml

I now have the birth certificate and it gives dob as 1862 in St Mary in the Castle, Hastings. It is exactly a year later to the day than his navy record. So I guess that was a lie or a convenient error. I can now see that his father was Charles a Stonemason and Mother Charlotte formerly Strickland. This would now match the records that you kindly found in the 1861 census.
I can now look into the other information that you found.

Once again thanks for your help

    regards

That's good! Now you just need to work out the puzzle of the marriages! I would wonder why (if the Charlotte Eldridge in 1871 is same person as Charlotte Phippard in 1861) did Charlotte marry George Eldridge using the surname Strickland?

    Happy hunting!!
