Default Stall Holders Records Whitecross Street Market?

Does anyone one know if records or photos exist of stallholders in London Markets. In the 1920s and 30s my husband's great aunt Pol had a stall in Whitecross Street Market. It's possible that she ran the stall from 1907 when she married as her father in law was a costermonger.

It would be lovely to find out more as my mother in law's memories are a bit vague.

Licences are issued by borough councils. You could try Islington Local History Centre

London Metropolitan Archives also have a good selection of photographs.

    Sue,
There is a very large article here about costermongers. It includes Whitecross Street in some of the paragraphs. Admittedly the article is 1851, before Aunt Pol's time but maybe within the father-in-law or grandfather's era.

    e.g.
Until it is seen and heard, we have no sense of the scramble that is going on throughout London for a living. The same scene takes place at the Brill -the same in Leather-lane -the same in Tottenham-court-road -the same in Whitecrossstreet; go to whatever corner of the metropolis you please, either on a Saturday night or a Sunday morning, and there is the same shouting and the same struggling to get the penny profit out of the poor man's Sunday's dinner.

"Why, I've known one man sell 10l. worth of fish -most of it mackarel -at his stall in Whitecross-street," said a costermonger to me, "and all in one snowy day, in last January.

Maybe some of it may jog a few memories, even if it's a "No, that ain't how it was"

Thanks for that Mutley, it does make interesting reading. It's also nice to see that even in the 1850s people were moaning that things aren't like they used to be

Thanks for that Pam, I was aware of Dockland Ancestors as I treated myself to one of their CDs at Gateshead though I hadn't realised the selection of books they offered.

It looks like I'm going to be asking for cash this Christmas as I'm spoilt for choice with all those books.

    Hello suedent

I have three postcards from a series of London People's Street Markets, Farringdon Road, Exmouth St (just up the road from the FRC) and - Whitecross Street! I don't know the date and you would not be able to identify any of the stall holders. I shall email you.

I saved the link to the Exmouth Street one that you gave me some time ago. Do you remeber Colin?

Now you mention it, I do, but (nothing personal here) that sort of information gets filed away in the the little gray cells as probably not something that needs to be remembered. Then comes the Why didn't I remember that moment.
