I am researching another branch of the family - John Harris - who lived in "Skegby Forest" Notts (when he died in 1921 after being run over by a tram). I think they were catholics and am trying to find the years of his children's births. Does anyone know if the records for catholic (or Cof E) exist on fiche at Sutton in Ashfield library? Also, in general, do libraries hold parish registers to a certain date eg 1900 or do they hold them later than this?
Sorry if I am rambling, and I do realise that the library is the best place to find out - but I only thought of it this morning!

Catholic registers are much less likely to be deposited than any others - I believe that quite a few are still with the parish priest (for instance, the registers for the Italian Church, Clerkenwell, dating from 1858 are still at the church). Even if they have been deposited most are in the relevant diocesan archives rather than county or local studies collections; there are, of course, always exceptions.
Michael Gandy's invaluable series of booklets Catholic Missions and Registers, 1700 - 1880, is well worth consulting even though they don't specifically cover the period you're interested in as the relevant entry will indicate the location of any earlier registers giving a guide to the whereabouts of later ones.
The first thing to try would be to write to the Parish Priest (don't forget the stamped address envelope); if you're lucky you might even get the records you want.
The Catholic Family History Society (http://www.catholic-history.org.uk/cfhs/) have made some transcriptions; you can see the list here:

Good luck
Colin
