After spending quite some time looking at my gg grandfather William Jefferies, who married Mary Flood in 1842 and then had a family in Horndean, it looks like the Jefferies, Floods, Barbers, Hobbs, Edneys, Bridles and a couple of other families are all quite heavily tied up together over a period of about 50 years.
Does anyone else have a link back to these families.?
The Jefferies and some of the Floods were in Portsea for quite a while before this so I'm only guessing that work and the promise of non-slum housing meant they upped sticks and moved up the road to Horndean.

Edney - Catherington
It's probably completely irrelevant but in the 1881 census my father's cousin Herbert Langer was lodging with William Edney, farmer and shopkeeper in Horndean - RG11 1239/12 p18. He was postmaster's assistant in the village.
Cannot trace a connection with any other of the names.

My gg grandfather was at the same address as William and Mary Bridle (who were both in their 70s) in 1841.
Mary was an Edney before marrying
My g grandfather had moved to Rowlands castle by 1881 and 2 of his sisters were living in Petersfield.
Also living with them was my gg grandmother who was a Flood before marrying. I've just had a look at the 1881 census you mentioned and it looks like that Mary Floods brother William Flood, and his family, were living next door to the Edneys and your cousin.
So may not have met at all, but you never know!
