Hi there,
I'm after advice on how to get the details of the parewnts of a baby girl who died as a result of an accident, and was the subject of an Inquest. I would also like to know how to get a copy of the Coroners Certificate which presumably would show the details of the accident?
I have received the death certificate, with no parents details at all - full details from the certificate are:
Registration District Stockport, Sub District Hyde, On 20th Aug 1837 at Bredbury, Jane Atherton Female aged 21 months. Cause of death: Accidentally crushed to death. Informant: John Booth, Constable of Werneth who was at the Inquest and delivered Coroners Certificate. Registered on 27 Aug 1837.
Hope someone can help!
Regards,
Derek

I think your best hope to find details of the incident (and hopefully names of relatives) is to try local newspapers.
Just occasionally a parish register will have some small note giving extra detail, either in the margin of the page or sometimes notes are made in end papers.
The relevant County Record Office may possibly have some record, or may have Coroner's records deposited with them, the survival and extent of such records is variable.

This is a long shot, but is poor little Jane's baptism on the IGI? You could then check through with any sets of parents' names and see if she's still there in the 1841 census or not.
Just a thought

Coroners Certificate
Hi there Geoffers and MabelA,
At the suggestion of Geoffers I have now managed to get a copy of the Stockport Advertiser from Aug 1837 which outlines the details (though again, strangely, did not name parents!)
The accident happened as a result of a horse and cart accident (a "dealer" carrying earthenware) which turned over and killing young Jane and seriously injured her mother.
I have, with much help from Stockport Heritage Library, solved the problem!
The reported accident stated that the Cart was travelling from Mottram. Parish Records show that Thomas Atherton married Hannah Hill on 30 Oct 1836 in Stockport, and in the 1837 Directory was living, as an earthenware dealer, at 109 Edward St. Jane Atherton of Edward St, Stockport was buried on 23 Aug at St Thomas'.
In the 1841 census, living in Mottram, are Thomas and Hannah Atherton. Though he is now a "Carder".
This all links in with my original "source" which started the quest - the NBI - giving me her name, age and date of death - living at EDWARD STREEET, Stockport. From which I got the death certificate - with no parents named!
All now nicely linked in, thanks for your efforts!
After all this by the way, I find out that I have still to find a link from this family to my tree! I am tracing Athertons in Stockport, but do not yet have a Thomas Atherton b.circa 1816! Ah well, such are the vagaries of the sport! Though Edward St apparently ran closely parallel to Bamford St where my Athertons lived - oh so close!
Regards,
Derek
