1861 Scottish census transcribed details show a Maynus ( Magnus) Sandison age 65 born Walter Caithnesshire. I can find no place called Walter so think it must be Watten. I shall be grateful if some one can look up the baptism details.

Hi Wendy,
Watten certainly sounds probable.
There is a Magnus Sandison born 22 Aug 1806 in Bower, Caithness. Bower and Watten are not far apart -

This Magnus was the son of:
John Sandison (b: 1766 in Bower, Caithness c: 9 Mar 1766 in Bower, & Wick)
and
Janet Bain (b: 1780 in Wick c: 10 Oct 1780 in Wick Caithness)
Magnus had siblings:
David Sandison b: 1799 in Bower c: 6 Oct 1799 in Bower Wick
Janet Sandison b: 19 Mar 1801 in Wick, Caithness
George Sandison b: 24 Oct 1802 in Bower, Caithness
The name Sandison has Shetland and Orkney links - maybe you'd have Family connections there?
This is as far as I've gone, hope it helps. I appreciate the dates don't quite fit, but maybe there's been an error in the records?

Or possible he wasn't christened until older? I am always mindful of that especially in an outlying area where perhaps there wasn't a fixed Minister.
The map was very useful I expect to become very knowledgable on the area as my sister & family are relocating there very soon.

Hi Joette , yes a 'shared minister' is a possibility I suppose. There are several churches I can think of where the one minister holds services for.
The map I 'borrowed' from Multimap btw.
I'm in Caithness.

I have been busy with things other than genealogy for past 6 months or so, so have just found your reply. Thanks very much for the information which I will follow up.
