Another request from New Zealand
I'm looking for info on the Payne family.
My father was b Southampton 1930
His father Alan Reginald Payne b Highcliffe 1902 (m Beatrice Jessie Benett)
His father John Thomas b Bombay 1865 (m Emily Louisa Corbin)
His father John b Chch 1835
He married Sarah Ward in Ireland, two children born there, some in India (he was in the Army) and the rest in Milton.
I find him at the Aldershot barracks in 1861 census, nothing in 1851 and one possibilty in 1841 is John b 1832, living at Mill Lane, Lymington with Eliza Payne b 1809 and two younger children (no husband).
I find Eliza again with the children (and an additional one) in 1851 but again no husband although she is listed as "married".
No sign of John. I wonder if he was already in the military and wonder if his father was also - would explain their absences on census nights !!
Many of the Paynes and their spouses are buried in the St Marks Churchyard in Highcliffe.
Any help is much appreciated.
Francis

John Payne
Hi Francis
I don't know if this is a possibility - Ancestry had it translated as PAYE but the census 1851 clearly says Payne

Thanks - very well spotted !
The birthplace could be correct although age is a little out. But I will investigate.
Also gives me another variation of the name to search for.

And even more interesting:
1841 there is John "Pay" and family but on original clearly Payne.
John Pay b 1811
Elizabeth Pay b 1816
John Pay b 1837
Robert Pay b 1839
Elizabeth Pay b 1841
At Christchurch - district of Bukly ??? - can anyone confirm that name?
Also can't make out occupation of John sr
Image is at
Looks very promising.
However, so far can't find any of this family under any name for 1851 !!!!

Info on Payne family
Hi Francis
I believe the Parish mentioned in the 1841 Census is 'Beckley' which is near Hinton which is shown on the Enumerator's Schedule for that district of Chichester.
I think that John's occupation reads 'Brickm' Possibly short for Brickman? But I wouldn't be 100% sure on that one.
That's all I've checked so far. When I get a moment I'll try and check out the Census bit for you

Thanks again Susan.
I've just come back from 4 weeks in Northern China, so please excuse the delay in responding.
No sign of any Paynes in that area !
Did you have any luck in finding the "Beckly" Paynes on the 1851 census ?
(One of John jr's sons was Robert if that means anything)
Thanks again.

Info on Payne family
H Francis
Long time no write for me! Hope you had a good time in China.
Did you get any further with your Payne's on the 1851 Census?
I've searched high & low and can't find that family, I even searched on first names!
If you've found them you've done wonders!

Thanks very much for pursuing this matter.
I'm in northern China again at the moment. Very heavy snow a couple of days ago but today not a cloud in the sky and lovely and warm indoors with the sun streaming in. Outside, though, it's a little matter of minus 23 deg C !
Anyway. I've also had no luck. As you can appreciate, when researching your family the one branch you do like to have success with is the one that carries your own name ! So it's very frustrating that I've not got very far with "Payne".
Possibilities with "missing" families are, of course, that they all died, or emigrated (did John return to join the army ?), etc.
Perhaps this is the wrong family, after all. But can't find any John Payne deaths which would suggest this.
Looking at my notes (which I take everywhere - even to China) IGI has the following John Paynes who might well be the one in 1841 (age OK as rounded in 1841)
b 09 MAY 1813 Holdenhurst, Hampshire, England
d 05 MAY 1913
Father: JOHN PAYNE
Mother: PHOEBE
OR
b 09 MAY 1813 Holdenhurst, Hampshire, England
d 1899
Father: JOHN PAYNE
Mother: MRS PHOEBE PAYNE
OR
b 01 DEC 1813
c 04 FEB 1814 Christchurch, Hampshire, England
Mother: MARY PAYNE
When a family "disappears" in one census they often turn up again next time and in subsequent cenuses.
I can't remember, and it's difficult to do it from here right now, whether I looked for the family in 1861, 1871 etc.
Did you check that ?
Thanks again.
Francis
