My greatgrandfather lived in Hanworth in the late 19th century and worked in a pickle factory, presumably not far away. Does anyone have any idea where this would have been or which company owned it, or where I could find out?

Try trade directories for the period or you could contact Hounslow Local Studies http://www.hounslow.info/page.aspx?p...lang=001lngdef

Thanks for the website, Colin. I will give that a go. Google doesn't produce anything 'pickly'. I did look in Pigot's 1839 and will try Kelly's 1898 (which I forgot I had!

Colin, thanks for that link to Hounslow.
They have given me the following reply for anyone else who may have ancestors who worked there:
The pickle factory was almost certainly part of 'The
Universal Provider', William Whiteley's Hanworth Farms estate (Butts
Farm and Glebe Farm, Hanworth). The Westbourne Grove, Bayswater
department store owner maintained orchards, market gardens, livestock
housing and butchery facilities here to provide fresh produce for his
London store. Bottling, jam making and the pickling of onions, red
cabbage, gherkins, capers and cauliflower were all carried out here. In
1895, Whiteley had a descriptive and photographic survey of his Hanworth
Farms made and published by Alfred Barnard, under the title 'Orchards
and Gardens'. The library's Local Collection has a copy of this book,
which describes and illustrates, amongst much else, the work of the
pickling department of the 'food factory' at Hanworth Farms.
My greatgrandparents lived in Glebe Cottages in 1901, so it looks as if the housing belonged to Glebe Farm.
Thanks again.

Have you thought that great grandfather's photo might appear in the book? I'm sure you have.

Yes, it could well be - he was the foreman. All I have to do is find a copy of the book!

Wow, Anne, that looks great! But the price
!! I think I'd need to see a copy before I even thought about buying it to see if gtgrandad was in it. It does sound a super book and I wonder if my library would be able to borrow a copy.

Whiteley - Hanworth
Hello - this may be a bit late but you may mean Mr Whiteley's Hanworth Farms - I have some history on this site:http://www.buttsfarm.org that you may find interesting.
Thank you
