    Smile Jersey Census 1861 & 1871

Would really appreciate it if someone could kindly look up the 1861 & 1871 Jersey Census for Alice Jane Travers. She was born on 20th January 1860 at 5 Market St, St Helier to Peter and Elizabeth Travers (nee Dowden). Any info on the family most welcome!

    Default Travers - Jersey

    Hi John,

Have found an Alice J. Travers, 12, b. Jersey St. Helier in the 1871 Jersey Census. However, she is the daughter of Betsey Jane Adderson, head, married, 40, Hotel Keeper, b. England. Also listed: Clara C. Travers, daughter, 6, b. Jersey St. Helier. They are at 13 Hope St, Star Hotel.

Could this be your Alice Jane? ‘Betsy’ is a diminutive of Elizabeth – possibly the mother married again?

Can’t find listings yet in the 1861 Census.

    Regards,

    Pam

    Hi John,

I think I’ve found your family in the 1861 Jersey Census. They are still at 5 Market St.:

Elizabeth Travers, Head, married, 30, Green Grocer, b. England
Louisa Stevens, Daughter, 8, Scholar, b. St Helier
Mary Ann Stevens, Daughter, 5, Scholar, b. St. Helier
Alice Travers, Daughter, 1, b. St. Helier
Jane Gerry, House Servant, widow, 62, b. England

also at same address: Mary Romanel (sp?), Head, widow, 27, Fruiterer, b. St. Helier

I am not totally certain of the name Stevens – it’s my best guess, so if you think this is the correct family, contact me through the ‘personal’ e-mail, and I will send you the records.

    Regards,

    Pam

    Default Alice Jane Travers

    Hello Pam,
Delighted to receive your reply and the Alice J Travers you have located is definitely the one! Elizabeth Travers did marry again to a fellow named Adderson - I think he was a master mariner. This was actually her third marriage as before she married Peter Travers she was married to a George Stevens - she was a widow to him when she married Peter Travers. I have found it difficult to track the family down so really appreciate your reply. Alice Jane Travers was my grandmother on my father's side - my grandfather was William Arthur Ellis and upon his death in London in 1903 was listed as living in 44 La Motte St, Jersey.
If you are able to send any Census details then I would really appreciate them.
This is my first post with British-Genealogy so am regarding myself as being very lucky indeed to receive your reply.

    Regards,
    John
