Alfred J Hulme

A little off topic but I'd like to know more about Alfred Hulme who was a painter of Shropshire landscapes around 1905-1908. I'm not even sure he was a native of the county but I'm guessing he probably was. Any ideas?

FreeBMD has HULME Alfred James born Shrewsbury [Reg Dist] 6a 732 in the March Quarter 1871.

In the 1901 Census at Coton Crescent, Shrewsbury there is:-
Alfred James HULME age 30 described as 'Artist (Portrait Painter)' working on his 'Own Account' but still living at home with his parents Samuel & Elizabeth HULME. See RG.13/2536 folio 59 page 17.

Even though I have the same surname I am not related to Alfred and was not previously aware of him.

in 1899 they were living at Heather Lea House,Berwick Road,Shrewsbury.

Alfred was listed in the trade directory as an artist.

I see that your family were from Broseley, a William Taylor was a butcher in Queen Street,Broseley in 1828.

In 1858 a William Taylor was listed as a butcher in Broseley & Ironbridge.

The story passed down was that my grandfather bought them from a jumble / house sale many years ago (20's?) and have been handed down ever since.
I think my William Taylor (b. 1796 in Broseley) had left by then as he had a son Thomas in 1829 born in Gloucester and was in Shrewsbury in 1830 setting up a clay pipe business aptly in Pipe Passage. His wife Mary was listed as born in Bristol but I have not been able to trace where or whether she was a second wife. The first may have been Mary as well just to confuse things.

I have Thomas Taylors in Broseley going back many generations before William though.

Pipe Passage was renamed Fairford Place and in 1964 16 Almshouses were built on the site.

there is an interesting pipe museum in Broseley if ever you visit.

Heatherlea house is still standing,it is on the corner of Berwick Road and Coton Crescent so both addresses are correct.

I've seen where Pipe Passage was. Been meaning to make time to go around the cemetry at St. Leonards at Broseley.
