Hi
Would appreciate any tips with finding some birth registrations. I have a William Smith from 26th CO Royal Engineers who married Selina Cole in Weymouth in 1864. The first child Catherine was born in Weymouth (can't find a likely candidate in GR BMD index) then two children Elizabeth 1867 William 1868 were born in Canada followed by Henry 1870 and Agnes & Alice born 1872 in Bermuda. I need to find a birth of one of these children to confirm the mothers maiden name as I am not 100% sure that this William & Selina Smith are relevant to my family. My William & Selina Smith were in Battersea in 1881 where his army background is not mentioned he is shown as a carpenter. However, the Bermuda link ties in with a time when the 26th Company of RE were in Bermuda.
All suggestions gratefully received.

Try searching the Regimental Registers of Births 1761-1924. These can seen on the pay-per-view site 1837online. I appreciate the long search for names such as SMITH. Entries in the index include the suanem, forename of children born, also the station where born, and colume and page numbers. If you find an entry of interest, you can order certificates via the GRO.
If you can locate his service record at TNA, his marriage may be recorded there - just basic details to update next-of-kin, including wife name, when and where married.

This is fairly straightforward. Start with his discharge papers which you will find in WO 97 at the National Archives.
If you read this research guide...
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...?sLeafletID=14
...it will tell you all about it.
Note that you really need to have a rough idea of when he was discharged.
Also note that for the period in question, he will not be indexed by name in the catalague.
