    Default GUILFOYLE: John Charles

My great grandfather, John Charles GUILFOYLE was an actor. His Stage name was Charles GUILFOYLE-SEYMOUR. In 1879 he married Elizabeth NATHAN. According to his death certificate - thank goodness he died in Scotland - his parents were Daniel GUILFOYLE and Sarah GUILFOYLE. According to his marriage certificate Daniel GUILFOYLE was a Law REgistrar and was deceased in 1879.
I know that John Charles GUILFOYLE was born in Ireland and that he began his acting career in Dublin but I have no idea where he was born and no way of getting to Ireland to find out. How can I track down his family when I don't know where to start with Irish records?

Civil Birth Registration began in Ireland in 1964 which is going to be too late for you if he was married in 1879.
Where did he get married and what did it give for the place of residence - is that when he is in Dublin?
I've had a quick look at Griffith's Valuation which was done in the 1850's and 60's (date depends on the area) and found that the name Daniel Guilfoyle appeared in the following areas:
    Townland, Parish, County
    Saintjohns, Castledermot, Kildare
Boley Upper, Clonenagh and Clonagheen, Laois
    Moneygall, Cullenwaine, Offaly
    Ballinamoe, Kilmurryely, Offaly
    Clonteige, Ballymackey, Tipperary
    Aughnaheela, Glenkeen, Tipperary
    Behamore (Smith), Modreeny, Tipperary
    Irby, Roscrea, Tipperary
    Parkmore, Roscrea, Tipperary
    Townparks, Roscrea, Tipperary
    Ballina Upper, Ballyvalloo, Wexford
    Ballina Upper, Castle-Ellis, Wexford
    Rathnew Commons, Rathnew, Wicklow

Certainly there seems to be quite a concentration in Tipperary
You can look through some of the information on-line at:
    http://members.cox.net/hayes1966/griffiths.htm
Although it doesn't show how much land etc, for that you have to go to a paying site or Ireland or I think the LDS

The LDS have some Deaths Index's filmed so you could see if you could find Daniel there and see if its from any of the above areas to get a location to search on. Certainly the name seems to be most common in central Ireland.

I hope that is a small help.

John Charles Married Elizabeth in 1879 in Liverpool - they were both acting there - I have been trying to find the source of the information about his birth and I can't. This is probably because I have taken over the search from my dad who died last year. He was pretty good at noting sources but this seems to be one that I haven't copied across. I will need to go through the notebooks again. I will certainly have a look at the Griffiths thingy, I am so new to Irish research having concentrated on the Jewish and Welsh connections until now. So if you need any suggestions on Welsh patronymics Thank you for taking the time to help
