I have a census reference to a John Jones born in Castle, Co. Kerry, Ireland in 1801/2, but cannot locate the place name of Castle in Co. Kerry.
Is/was there such a place called Castle (on it's own) please?
Any help would be appreceiated. Thanks
Alan

Hi Alan
The definitive place to search for Irish townlands is www.seanruad.com If you put Castle in as townland, specifying "at the begining of the field" and Kerry under County you get a list of 16 places starting with Castle. Unfortunately all continue with something else.
Hopefully one of the more knowledgable members of the list might be able to help.

Could the entry be a mishearing of an unusual name? One that springs to mind is Caherciveen (in Kerry). It just seems a little too long for this case (could sound a bit like castleveen). Caher seems too short and doesn't have the 's' sound in it.
Perhaps those with more knowledge of Kerry names might come up with possibilities.
Best wishes,
Lynda
